Faculty Athletics Representative


A Professor in the Psychology Department at the College of the Holy Cross, John Axelson has served as the school’s Faculty Athletics Representative since 1998. He has also been Holy Cross’ representative on the Patriot League Policy Committee since 1998, and served as that committee’s chair from 2011-2015. Currently the chair of the Holy Cross Athletic Council, Axelson recently spent time on the Patriot League Ad hoc Committee to Review the Academic Index and the Patriot League Sportsmanship Policy Committee.

Axelson began his time in the Holy Cross psychology department as an Assistant Professor in 1982, then became an Associate Professor in 1988 and a Professor in 1999. He served as the Department Chair from 1991-1995, and was the Director of the Biological Psychology Concentration from 2001-2008. Axelson has also spent time as a Research Physiologist at the VA Hospital in Boston, and as a Visiting Scientist at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research. In addition, he has authored numerous publications and received several extramural grants.

Axelson earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pacific Lutheran University, and also holds both a master’s degree and a doctorate in psychology from Tulane University. In addition, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Emory School of Medicine, and received a certificate in plant based nutrition from the Cornell T. Colin Campbell Foundation.
