Crusaders Pull Away For 67-53 Victory Over Lafayette

THE BASICS:

•   Score: Holy Cross 67, Lafayette 53

•   Records: Holy Cross 10-14, 5-8 PL; Lafayette 5-19, 2-11 PL

•   Location: Hart Center, Worcester, Mass.

•   Date: February 10, 2016

•   The Lead: Junior forward Malachi Alexander posted team-highs of 14 points and nine rebounds, as the Holy Cross men’s basketball team defeated Lafayette 67-53 at the Hart Center.

 

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

•   After the Leopards opened the game with an early 5-2 advantage, Holy Cross scored seven unanswered points to take a 9-5 lead.

•   The Crusaders were later up 12-11, before using an 8-2 run to pull in front by seven (20-13) with nine minutes left in the half. Alexander and senior guard Cullen Hamilton both his three-pointers during that spurt, while freshman forward Jehyve Floyd added a fast break layup.

•   Lafayette closed back to within two (22-20), before Holy Cross scored the next eight points to increase its lead to 10 (30-20) with two minutes left before the break.

•   The Leopards then closed out the half with a 7-1 run to trail by just four points (31-27) heading into the locker room.

•   The Crusaders came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, using a quick 6-2 spurt to build their lead back up to eight points.

•   Holy Cross was later up by six (44-38) with 11:23 left to play, when Alexander knocked down back-to-back three-pointers make it a 12-point game (50-38).

•   A few minutes later, the Crusaders used a 9-3 run to pull in front by 15 (61-46) and put the game away. Junior guard Robert Champion scored five of Holy Cross’ points during that spurt, while junior guard Anthony Thompson netted the other four points.

•   The Leopards would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way, as the Crusaders eventually posted a 14-point victory.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

•   Champion (12 points, nine rebounds), Thompson (12 points, three rebounds), freshman forward Karl Charles (10 points, six rebounds) and Hamilton (10 points, four assists) all joined Alexander in double figures.

•   Bryce Scott led Lafayette with 18 points and three rebounds.

•   Holy Cross hit 42.1 percent of its shots on the night (24 of 57), in addition to holding a 40-21 rebounding advantage.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

•   The Crusaders’ 40 rebounds were their most in a single game this season.

•   Holy Cross had five players score in double-digits for the third time this year.

•   The Crusaders are now in a three-way tie for seventh place in the Patriot League with both American and Army at 5-8.

•   Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Feb. 15, when it travels to Lehigh for a 7:30 p.m. game. The contest between the Crusaders and the Mountain Hawks will be shown live on the CBS Sports Network.
