Women's Ice Hockey Falls To St. Anselm

The Lead: Junior co-captain forward Kara Violette along with sophomore forward Sam Girard each recorded three points, but the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team suffered a 7-3 setback to St. Anselm at home on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • St. Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the opening period, holding an 11-5 shots on net advantage over Holy Cross. Kaitlyn Spillane notched two goals on a pair of upper-pocket glove-side wrist shots during this span.
  • The Crusaders then trimmed the deficit to two goals with a power play score by Girard on a re-directed shot from inside the slot with just 1:14 left on the clock. Leading 3-1 at the first intermission, the Hawks went 1-2 on first period power plays, as Holy Cross went 1-2.
  • Both sides netted a goal in the second period, as the Hawks held onto their two-goal lead.
  • St. Anselm registered its second power play goal at the 8:10 mark to broaden the gap with the score, 4-1. Then with 2:28 left to play in the middle period, Holy Cross responded, as Girard found the back of the net on a one-timer from on a pass sent across the crease by Violette.
  • Second period shots were 12-5 in favor of St. Anselm, while the Hawks went 1-2 on the power play and Holy Cross went 0-1. The Crusaders trailed 4-2 entering the final frame.
  • The Hawks tacked on three more goals in the third period, while Violette netted one more score for Holy Cross on a breakaway (14:24), as the Crusaders were unable to overcome the deficit and suffered the 7-3 loss.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Violette and Girard who each tallied three points. Spillane led the Hawks with her hat-trick.
  • Holy Cross was outshot by St. Anselm, 29-14
  • Freshman goaltender Marcia LaPlante spent the first 28:27 in net for Holy Cross, making 14 saves and allowing four goals to take the loss. Junior goaltender Tessie Salatas played the final minutes of the game for the Crusaders, making eight stops and allowing two scores. Maddie Scavotto earned the win for St. Anselm with 11 saves.
  • Holy Cross went 1-4 on the power play, while St. Anselm went 2-5.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Senior forward Elizabeth Scala has tallied at least one point in the last 11 games she has played in. She has 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists and 50 career points on 26 goals and 24 assists.
  • Senior co-captain defender Isabela Bagi ranks seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 54 career assists.
  • Violette is now tied for ninth all-time in the program’s history with 42 career goals.

  • Holy Cross wraps up its regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the Crusaders take on Franklin Pierce for senior day. The puck drops at 2:05 p.m.
