The Lead:  Sophomore Steve Tierney set his third Holy Cross all-time record at the Patriot League Championship, swimming for a time of 46.05 in the 100-yard freestyle, as the men’s swimming and diving team concluded their 2016-2017 season on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tierney first broke the 100-yard freestyle as an individual effort, notching the 19th-place spot with his time of 46.21. He then re-set the record while swimming the lead-off leg in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The prior record was set during the 2003 Patriot League Championship.
  • The Crusaders set a new Holy Cross record in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The remainder of the record-breaking 400-yard freestyle relay team consisted of senior co-captain Alex Young, Junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley.
  • Junior Ethan Nightingale came close to hitting a finals qualifying mark in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a personal record and season-best mark of 1:57.20 for a 19th-place finish.
  • With his time of 2:07.47, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins captured the 15th-place spot in the 200-yard breaststroke. His mark was good for a personal record time.
  • Sbarbaro took the 21st-place spot in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming for a season-best time of 1:55.81.
  • Concluding the diving events, sophomore Riccardo Marcangeli (217.00) and junior Jimmy Nugent (212.80) finished 10th and 11th, respectively in the three-meter dive.
  • With his time of 18:05.09, junior John Williams finished 26th in the 1650-yard freestyle. His mark was a personal record.
  • Navy won the Patriot League Championship with 846 points.

  • Finishing eighth overall, the men posted their top performance at the Patriot League Championship in the program's history.

TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The swimming and diving Patriot League Championship served as part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition where Holy Cross and Boston University square off throughout the year. Boston University now holds an 8-1 lead.
