Five Crusaders Earn NEHC All-Conference Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. – Five members of the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team earned New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) accolades, as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon. Junior co-captain forward Kara Violette was named NEHC Player of the Year, as well as first team All-NEHC, while sophomore forward Sam Girard and senior co-captain defender Isabela Bagi each were named second team All-NEHC. Senior forward Elizabeth Scala earned third team All-NEHC honors, as freshman defender Hannah Gillis was selected to the NEHC All-Rookie team.
Violette becomes just the second Crusader in the program’s history to receive conference Player of the Year recognition, as she joins Stacey Hochkins ’12, who was named ECAC East Player of the Year in 2010. Leading the Crusaders with 33 points on a 17 goals and 16 assists in 25 games played, Violette picks up her second and third conference accolades after being named to the ECAC East All-Rookie team as a freshman. Her 33 points are tied for third in the NEHC, while her 17 goals are a tied for the conference lead. She scored at least one point in 20 of 25 games on the year and has 43 career goals, which rank eighth all-time in Holy Cross history.
Girard is tied for second on the team with 28 points on 17 goals and 11 assists in 24 games played. Girard’s 28 points are tied for 11th in the league, while her 17 goals are tied for leading the NEHC. Girard has posted six game-winning goals this season, which stand second in the conference and are tied for second all-time in the program’s history. Girard also leads the team with five power play goals, helping the Crusaders achieve a 20.0 power play percentage (18-90), which ranks third in the NEHC.
Bagi picks up her seventh All-Conference honor, while contributing 13 points on three goals and 10 assists to rank 10th in the NEHC among all defenders in scoring in just 12 games played. Bagi has 54 career assists, which are seventh all-time in Holy Cross history and has helped the Crusaders’ defense achieve a 1.44 goals per game scoring defense and 89.2 penalty kill percentage (99-111), which are both fourth in the NEHC.
Scala has tallied at least one point in her last 12 games played and is tied for second on the team in scoring with 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists). Scala’s 28 points are tied for 11th in the NEHC, as she has added six power points to help boost Holy Cross with a conference third-ranked 20.0 power play percentage.
Playing in 24 of 25 games on the year, Gillis has been instrumental on the defensive line all season. She’s tied for 12th place in points across all the league’s defenders as well as freshmen in scoring with 11 assists and one goal on the year. Gillis has helped the Holy Cross defense limit its opponents to 1.44 goals per game, while also helping the Crusaders in holding an 89.2 penalty kill percentage (99-111), which is fourth in the NEHC.
Holy Cross (21-4-0, 13-3-0 NEHC) returns to action this weekend for the NEHC Open Tournament hosted by Sacred Heart from Feb. 25-26 at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Conn. The semifinal round will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25 with No. 2 Holy Cross taking on No. 3 Franklin Pierce at 1:00 p.m., before No. 1 St. Anselm faces No. 4 Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 4:00 p.m. with the consolation game starting at 1:00 p.m. The Crusaders are the defending NEHC Open Tournament champion.
