Holy Cross Falls To Boston University In Overtime

THE BASICS:

  • Score:  Boston University 71, Holy Cross 68 (OT)
  • Records: Holy Cross 15-16, 9-9 PL; Boston University 17-13, 12-6 PL
  • Location: Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, Worcester, Mass.
  • Date: February 25, 2017
  • The Lead: Senior guard Robert Champion scored a game-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Boston University 71-68 in overtime at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, Champion was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • In addition to his 27 points, he recorded five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
  • Champion also hit five of 11 shots from three-point range on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, and the Terriers held an 18-17 lead with 7:24 left in the first half.
  • The Crusaders then went on an 11-3 spurt to claim the lead, including five points from Champion.
  • Holy Cross eventually led by 10 points late in the half, before taking a 33-24 advantage into the locker room.
  • Boston University started the second half on fire, hitting four straight three-pointers while going on a 22-6 run to pull in front.
  • The Terriers would lead by as many as nine points (51-42), when the Crusaders used a quick 9-2 spurt to get back into the game.
  • Two free throws by Champion with 2:40 remaining tied the game at 59-59, and neither team scored again in regulation as the game went to overtime.
  • Boston University started the extra session with an 8-3 spurt to pull in front, and was still up 69-64 with less than 30 seconds to play.
  • A pair of foul shots by Champion and a layup by sophomore guard Patrick Benzan made the score 69-68, before Justin Alston hit two free throws to put the Terriers up 71-68.
  • Holy Cross was unable to get a clean shot off on its final possession, as Boston University held on for the victory.

 

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE:

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made just 38.6 percent of their field goal attempts on the day, while the Terriers were able to connect on 47.8 percent of their shots from the floor and 46.7 percent from three-point range.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander finished the game with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.
  • Boston University was led by Tyler Scanlon with 19 points.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The crowd of 3,548 marked the first sell out at the new Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex (capacity 3,536).
  • Prior to tip-off, eight members of the Holy Cross basketball program who will be concluding their collegiate careers at the end of the 2016-2017 season were honored in a pregame ceremony.
  • Alexander, Champion, senior forward Riley Criswell, senior center Matt Husek, senior guard Thomas Kennedy, senior guard Patrick Rielly and senior guard Anthony Thompson were recognized, along with team manager John Roque.
  • Following the contest, Scanlon received the Martin J. O'Malley Award as the most valuable player of Holy Cross' Winter Homecoming game.

 

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the second annual Turnpike Trophy competition, in which Boston University now holds a 12-1 lead.
  • Scanlon was selected as the game’s Turnpike Trophy MVP.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up comes on March 2, when the women’s tennis teams face off in Boston.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Thursday, March 2, when it travels to Navy for a quarterfinal round game in the Patriot League Tournament.
