Men's Lacrosse Falls To #12 Loyola Maryland

The Lead: Pat Spencer posted 10 points with nine assists for the Greyhounds as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Loyola Maryland, 16-9, in Patriot League action on Saturday. Senior Sean Kirkpatrick posted a career-best four goals for the Crusaders, while senior Kevin Lux tallied five points with a career-best four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Mike Perkins, the Crusaders answered with two straight goals to move out to a 2-1 advantage with 5:12 left in the first quarter. Kirkpatrick and freshman Kevin Kodzis each found the back of the net.
  • But John Duffy posted a goal for Loyola as the game was tied at 2-2 after the first quarter.
  • The Greyhounds then netted the first four goals of the second quarter to increase their lead to 6-2.
  • With 2:30 remaining in the second quarter, Kirkpatrick recorded his second goal of the contest as the Crusaders trailed 6-3 at halftime.
  • After senior Jon Vogel scored the first goal of the third quarter to cut the Loyola lead to 6-4, the Greyhounds responded with three consecutive goals to take a 9-4 advantage with 9:26 remaining in the third.
  • The Crusaders then netted two out of the next three goals to make it a 10-6 score with 5:00 left in the third frame. Kirkpatrick scored his third goal of the game and Lux posted his first goal and fourth point.
  • After the Greyhounds extended its lead to 12-6, senior Marc Buermann found the back of the net. But a late goal by the Greyhounds made it a 13-7 contest going to the fourth quarter.
  • Junior Matthew Fischetti tallied the first goal of the fourth quarter, but two unanswered goals by the Greyhounds extended their lead to 15-8 with 9:25 left.
  • Kirkpatrick scored on an extra-man opportunity for his fourth goal of the game and Lux tallied his fourth assist and fifth point of the contest with 8:00 remaining.
  • But a final goal by Loyola gave the Greyhounds the 16-9 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro made 10 saves, while Jacob Stover posted four saves to earn the win and Grant Limone also tallied three saves for the Greyhounds.
  • Loyola outshot Holy Cross, 40-34.
  • The Greyhounds picked up 42 ground balls and the Crusaders had 31.
  • Lehigh won 20 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured eight.
  • The Crusaders went 1-4 on extra-man opportunities, while the Greyhounds went 1-1.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • This was the first collegiate hat-trick for Kirkpatrick.
  • Lux posted a career-best four assists.
  • The goal by Kodzis was the first of his collegiate career.
  • Buermann has scored at least one goal in 12 straight games. He entered the game with the 10th longest streak in the nation.

  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 11, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to play Bucknell at 1:00 p.m.
