The Lead: Junior Kerianne Moran scored with 4:34 remaining in the second half to break a 10-10 tie and lift the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Ohio State at Kuzniewski Field. This was the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Crusaders are off to their best start to a season in 10 years when they were 6-2 in 2007.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The score was tied at 2-2 midway through the first half, before sophomore Baker Early and senior Maddie Ward scored back-to-back goals to give the Crusaders a 4-2 lead.
After the Buckeyes came back to tie up the score at 5-5, senior Mary Patalita scored a free position goal to give Holy Cross a 6-5 halftime advantage.
A free position goal by Ward early in the second half gave the Crusaders a 7-5 lead, before Ohio State ran off four straight goals to go up 9-7.
But Holy Cross came back to score the next three goals and took a 10-9 lead when Patalita scored with 12:44 remaining.
The Buckeyes tied the game up once again with 5:53 to play, on a free position goal by Paulina Constant, before Moran netted the game-winner for the Crusaders.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Senior Tess MacKay led Holy Cross with three goals and one assist on the night.
Patalita added three goals, while Ward scored twice.
Molly Wood scored a game-high four goals for Ohio State.
Junior Julia Maloney made five saves in goal for the Crusaders, while Jill Rizzo recorded four saves for the Buckeyes.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
The Crusaders are off to best start in 10 years. Holy Cross started 6-2 in 2007.
The goal was the first collegiate game winner for Moran.
The hat trick by MacKay was her fourth of the season and the eighth of her career.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 18, when they play host to Lehigh at 11:05 a.m.
