Softball Splits Opening Day Of The Stony Brook Invitational

The Lead: The Holy Cross softball team outhit Brown, 11-5, as senior second baseman Emily Krisanda led the Crusaders to a 7-2 victory over the Bears, going two-for-four at the plate with two extra-base hits and two RBIs at the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders notched three runs on three hits and an error to jump out to an early lead in the opening inning. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster started the rally, leading off with a triple before sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler picked up the first RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly hit to left field. Junior catcher Savannah Young reached on an error, as senior second baseman Emily Krisanda followed with her first home run of the season, giving Holy Cross the 3-0 first inning lead.
  • The Bears responded in the bottom of the second inning with a home run hit by Raquel Blanchard, to close in on two runs with the score, 3-1.
  • Holy Cross then moved out to a six-run lead, plating four more runs in the top of the third inning. The Crusaders had the bases loaded after junior infielders Taylor Moss and Mandy McCarthy each posted singles, while Krisanda reached on an error. Freshman designated player Sydney Burr walked to score a run before junior left fielder Gabby Muniz and senior right fielder Kylee Malouf each earned RBIs with base hits, bringing home another pair of runs. Brewster brought in the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice grounder, as Holy Cross took a 7-1 advantage.
  • Brown got runners on base in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Crusaders turned a double play, as sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held recorded a strikeout to escape the inning damage-free.
  • The Bears then answered in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring a run on a hit and an error, but the Crusaders refused to allow Brown to get any closer, as Holy Cross held onto the 7-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Krisanda who batted .500 (two-for-four) tallying two extra-base hits and registering two RBIs
  • Brewster (two-for-four), Young (two-for-four) and McCarthy (two-for-three) joined Krisanda in fueling Holy Cross’ offense.
  • The Crusaders outhit the Bears, 11-5, holding a .333 team batting average.
  • Holy Cross left eight runners on base, while Brown left six.
  • Held pitched a full game for the Crusaders, recording four strikeouts to earn the win.
  • Leah Nakashima pitched the first 2.1 innings for the Bears and took the loss.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Krisanda hit her first home run of the season and second of her career.
  • Brewster tallied her third career triple.
  • The Crusaders have now won three straight games over the Bears, outhitting Brown, 29-13 and outscoring them 18-3 during this streak. Holy Cross has come out on top in the past seven of 10 meetings against the Bears.

The Lead: Brewster went two-for-two at the plate for the Crusaders, but the Holy Cross softball team suffered a 9-0 setback to Stony Brook in their second game of the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders trailed 2-0 after the first inning, as Stony Brook scored on two hits and two errors to take an early lead.
  • The Seawolves then extended their lead to seven runs with two home runs each hit by Jourdin Hering in the top of the second and third innings. Hering’s first home run in the second ining scored two runs, and her second homer scored another three runs in the third inning, giving Stony Brook a 7-0 advantage.
  • Stony Brook tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning using two hits with Chelsea Evans and Melissa Rahrich each picking up RBIs, as the Seawolves stretched out to a 9-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Holy Cross got runners on first in third base after Wahler cranked a double with two outs, but Stony Brook found the final out to claim the 9-0 five-inning win before the Crusaders could plate a run.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hits were 11-5 in favor of Stony Brook.
  • The Crusaders left six runners on base, while the Seawolves left seven runners stranded.
  • Junior pitcher Katy Watson threw for 1.1 innings, notching three strikeouts but took the loss for Holy Cross.
  • Lindsey Hughes pitched a full game to pick up the win for Stony Brook.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Brewster batted .666 (four-for-six) through todays’ games.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action at the Stony Brook Invitational tomorrow, facing the Seawolves and the Bears in the second segment of the tournament. The Crusaders will take on Stony Brook at 12:30 p.m. before taking the field against Brown at 2:30 p.m.
