Crusaders To Play At Navy In Patriot League Quarterfinal Matchup

The No. 5 seed Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team (4-9, 4-4 Patriot League) will travel to Annapolis, Md., to take on No. 4 seed Navy (6-7, 4-4 Patriot League) in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Here is what you need to know as the Crusaders prepare for their second straight appearance in the Patriot League Tournament.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Holy Cross will travel to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. The game can be seen on the Patriot League Network. Go here to watch the game.
  • Holy Cross is the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, while the Midshipmen are No. 4 seed. Navy won this year’s regular season matchup by an 11-4 score on April 2 in Worcester.
  • This is the Crusaders second appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. Last year, Holy Cross qualified for the tournament for the first time in program history.
  • Navy has won five Patriot League Tournament championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2009).

CRUSADERS QUALIFY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT PL TOURNAMENT

  • This will be the Crusaders second straight trip to the Patriot League Tournament.
  • Loyola Maryland (6-2) is the No. 1 seed, Army West Point (6-2) is the No. 2 seed, Boston University (5-3) is the No. 3 seed, Navy (4-4) is the No. 4 seed, Holy Cross (4-4) is the No. 5 seed and Lehigh (4-4) is the No. 6 seed.
  • The quarterfinals are on Tuesday, April 25. Holy Cross will play at Navy at 6:00 p.m., while Lehigh will be at Boston University at 7:00 p.m. The semifinals and championship will be played at Loyola Maryland on April 28 and April 30. The brackets will re-seed after the quarterfinal round.
  • Last year, Holy Cross earned its first-ever bid to the tournament. The Crusaders were No. 6 seed and fell at No. 3 seed Bucknell, 13-7, on April 26.

CRUSADERS SET PROGRAM RECORD FOR PATRIOT LEAGUE WINS

  • The Crusaders’ four Patriot League victories this season are the most in program history.
  • The Crusaders posted three Patriot League wins the past two seasons (2015 and 2016).

SENIOR CLASS MAKES MAJOR IMPACT

 

  • This year’s senior class has led the Crusaders to their most Patriot League wins during a four-year span in program history with 11. As sophomores this class contributed to the team earning their first two victories versus top 10 nationally ranked opponents with wins versus No. 8 Loyola Maryland and No. 9 Army West Point. The Crusaders were also ranked No. 19 in the country earning their first ever national ranking. Then as juniors, Holy Cross qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time ever. And then this season, the Crusaders have recorded their most ever Patriot League victories and have qualified for the tournament for the second straight year.

LUX WITH 109 CAREER POINTS

 

  • Senior Kevin Lux has played in all 13 games this season as he leads the team with 22 assists, while he is second with 36 points and third with 14 goals. His 22 assists are tied for fourth in the Patriot League.
  • For his career, Lux has 109 career points with 63 goals and 46 assists. He is the 23rd Crusader in program history to record 100 points.

CRUSADERS LEAD THE PATRIOT LEAGUE IN CAUSED TURNOVERS

  • The Crusaders lead the Patriot League and are seventh nationally with 9.00 caused turnovers per game.
  • Junior Henry Lillyis seventh in the Patriot League with 1.54 caused turnovers per game. Sophomore Matt Farrell is tied for eighth in the Patriot League with 1.46 caused turnovers per game.

KIRKPATRICK LEADING THE TEAM IN GOALS

 

  • Senior Sean Kirkpatrick leads the team with 26 goals and 37 points. His 11 assists are second.
  • His 25 goals are fifth in the Patriot League.
  • Kirkpatrick has six hat tricks this season.

ORTLIEB WITH TWO BIG GAME WINNERS

  • Senior Jack Ortlieb has two career game-winning goals. Both game-winning goals have clinched the two Patriot League Tournament bids for the program.
  • Last year, he netted the game winner in the 11-7 victory versus Boston University on April 22 to secure the team’s first-ever bid to the Patriot League Tournament, while this season he broke a 11-11 tie with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter for the 12-11 victory versus Colgate on April 15.

THE SERIES WITH NAVY

  • The Crusaders are 1-13 all-time versus the Midshipmen as Navy has won four straight in the series.
  • Holy Cross defeated Navy by a 7-5 score on March 17, 2013 at Citi Field.
