HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two scoreless innings, Holy Cross used a five-hit surge to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster started the rally with a single to left center field with two outs in the inning. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler followed with a base hit up the middle, as Brewster advanced to third base. Up next, Krisanda cleared the bases with a RBI double to break the tie and give Holy Cross its 2-0 lead. Junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy recorded the fourth-straight hit for the Crusaders to keep the momentum alive and put Krisanda on third base. Moss then picked up the third RBI of the game with a single to right field.
  • The Crusaders played strong defense over the next two innings to maintain their lead. After junior pitcher Katy Watson retired three-straight batters in the top of the fifth inning, Holy Cross tacked on two more runs and expanded out to a 5-0 advantage in the bottom half of the frame.
  • With one out, Krisanda and McCarthy each hit singles before Moss earned her second RBI single of the day. Junior catcher Savannah Young then plated McCarthy on a sacrifice fly to right field, as the Crusaders took a 5-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross refused to look back from there and continued to demonstrate strong defensive efforts to keep Lafayette off the board. In the top of the sixth inning, Brooke Wensel smashed a deep fly ball to center field, as Brewster tracked the ball to the fence and made the catch to prevent an extra-base hit.
  • The Leopards got runners on first and third base with two down in the top of the seventh inning, but the Crusaders prevailed and found the final out of the game to claim 5-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Four different Crusaders batted .667 (2-for-3), including Brewster, Moss, Krisanda and McCarthy. Krisanda and Moss led the way with two RBIs, as Young chipped in with a .500 batting average and drove in one run.

  • Holy Cross outhit Lafayette, 11-6.
  • Holy Cross left six runners on base, while Lafayette left eight base runners stranded.
  • Watson pitched a complete seven innings, recording four strikeouts to earn the win, as well as her first career shutout.
  • Stephanie Thomas pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed five earned runs to take the loss for the Leopards.
