The Crusaders will return to action at the conference tournament tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. to face No. 3 seed Army West Point in the second round at Leadership Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross trailed 5-0 after the opening inning. With two outs, Mary-Hannah Smith smashed a solo homer to right center field before Lehigh plated another four runs with a three-hit surge and an error.
  • The Mountain Hawks added another run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI double hit by Carolyn Wright to expand out to a 6-0 advantage.
  • After a series of fielder's choice plays and an error, the Crusaders had runners on first and third base with two down in the top of the third inning. However, the Mountain Hawks found the final out of the inning to escape damage-free and hold onto their lead.
  • Lehigh moved out to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single before the Crusaders notched the next run in the top of the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Taylor Moss walked before freshman designated player Sydney Behrens reached on a fielding error. Malouf picked up the RBI on her second hit of the game with a single popped up to shallow left field, as the Crusaders made it a 7-1 game.
  • However, the Mountain Hawks earned the final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning to claim the 9-1 opening round win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hits were 12-6 in favor of Lehigh.
  • Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while the Mountain Hawks left 10 base runners stranded.
  • Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held started in the circle for Holy Cross and allowed the first two earned runs to take the loss. Throwing for the final five innings was junior pitcher Katy Watson, who recorded four strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
  • Christine Campbell pitched a full game for Lehigh to pick up the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders competed in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in six seasons and made their 14th overall appearance in the conference postseason.

  • Young batted .500 today and notched her fifth double of the season and eighth of her career.
