Baseball Falls To Yale In Elimination Game At Corvallis Regional

The Lead: The 2016-2017 season concluded for the Holy Cross baseball team Sunday, as the Crusaders fell to Yale by a score of 9-5 in the Corvallis Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Yale got off to a strong start in the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, The Bulldogs extended their lead by one with an RBI single from Richard Slenker.
  • Yale added three more runs in the fourth inning off four hits, making it 6-0 in their favor.
  • Holy Cross got on the board in the fifth inning, as senior Bill Schlich labeled a double down the left field line to bring home senior Josh Hassell and freshman Chris Rinaldi.
  • The Bulldogs added pressure in the sixth inning, tallying three runs on a trio of hits to make it 9-2 Yale.
  • Holy Cross responded with a run off an RBI single from Schlich to score freshman Alex Volpi.
  • The Crusaders added two more runs on three hits in the eighth off a single from sophomore Kellen McCormick that brought home seniors Alex Voitik and Anthony Critelli.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Bulldogs outhit Holy Cross 13-10.
  • The Crusaders left seven runners on base, while Yale left three.
  • Senior Phil Reese took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits.
  • Kumar Nambiar earned the win for Yale, allowing five runs in seven innings.
  • Schlich led the Crusaders' offense, hitting 2-for-3 while driving in three runs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • This was the first NCAA Tournament appearance for the Crusaders since 1978.
  • Holy Cross earned a bid to the national tournament after capturing its first-ever Patriot League Championship this year.
  • On Saturday, the Crusaders earned their first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1978 with a 7-4 win over No. 25 Nebraska.
  • Schlich was named to the Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team.
