George Capen Signs With Seattle Mariners

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball Class of 2017 graduate George Capen signed a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners on Friday afternoon. Capen will report to the Mariners’ Arizona League program to begin his professional career. Over the summer, he served as an assistant coach with the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Capen served as one of the Crusaders’ top relievers during the 2017 season, making 28 appearances while pitching 47.1 innings. He also threw 51 strikeouts while posting a record of 7-1. Capen holds the school record for career pitching appearances with 99. In that time he held a record of 14-5 while holding an ERA of 3.98. In 167.1 total innings he posted 138 strikeouts.

Holy Cross went 24-29 on the season, and captured its first-ever Patriot League Championship to secure its first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 1978. The Crusaders also earned their first win in the NCAA Tournament since 1978 with a 7-4 victory over No. 25 Nebraska.
