Men's Soccer in the 2017 Season

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s soccer concluded their 2017 campaign with a 7-9-4 overall record and 4-3-2 mark in Patriot League action. The Crusaders finished in fifth place for their first Patriot League Tournament bid since 2013. The team made a run to the Patriot League Championship game, where they fell to Colgate, 1-0, on Nov. 12.

 

THE 2017 SEASON:

  • The Crusaders recorded four Patriot League wins, which is the most since 2013.
  • Despite being picked 10th in the preseason poll, the Crusaders finished fifth and earned their first Tournament bid since 2013.
  • The Crusaders posted wins over Lafayette, Bucknell, Colgate, and Lehigh in conference action. Holy Cross owns wins over Hartford and Northeastern in non-conference play.
  • The team played a five-game unbeaten streak at the end of the season, including four-consecutive clean sheets for the first time since 2002.
  • Henry Stutz led the Crusaders to 480 minutes without conceding a goal. (Oct. 25 – Nov. 12).
  • Stutz posted seven shutouts on the year, ranking him third on the all-time single season shutout list at Holy Cross.
  • Arno Rupp led the team with 18 points from eight goals and two assists. Rupp’s 18 point season propelled him into the 11th spot on the all-time career points list with 43.
  • Max Krause led the team in assists, with four.
  • Nine different Crusaders recorded at least one goal on the season and ten recorded at least one point.
  • The Crusaders advanced to the Patriot League Final after defeating Lehigh (3-0) in the Quarterfinal and Boston University (0-0) in penalty kicks in the Semifinal.

 

2017 AWARDS AND HONORS:

  • Three Crusaders earned All-Patriot League honors as Justin Carfora and Arno Rupp were selected to the Second Team and Yuji Callahan was selected to the Third Team.
  • Arno Rupp claimed the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as a spot on the All-Patriot League Academic Team and CoSIDA All-Academic District 1 Team.
  • Henry Stutz, Yuji Callahan, and Brad Ross were selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.

 

LUKE DUNIVANT AWARD:

  • Brad Ross was the 2017 recipient of the Luke Dunivant Award on Oct. 14.
  • The award was established in memory of former Holy Cross men's soccer player Luke Dunivant, Class of 1997, who passed away in 2008 after a courageous battle with leukemia. The award is presented annually to a member of the men's soccer team who, like Luke, has inspired others by displaying outstanding courage, commitment to the team and sportsmanship during his career.
