Holy Cross Athletics   11-27-2017

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross Director of Athletics Nathan Pine has announced that head baseball coach Greg DiCenzo has agreed to a contract extension through the 2021 season. DiCenzo completed his 10th year as head coach of the Crusaders this past season, where he led Holy Cross to its first-ever Patriot League Championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1978.

“Coach DiCenzo has guided our program to new levels of success throughout his tenure at Holy Cross, and I am pleased to announce that he will continue to lead our baseball program through the 2021 season,” said Pine. “It is important to keep coaches of his caliber at Holy Cross and ensure the continuity of leadership here on the Hill as we defend our Patriot League title in 2018 and beyond."

The Crusaders have gone 245-264-1 overall and 111-85 in Patriot League play during DiCenzo's tenure, with the team posting 20-win seasons in nine of the last 10 campaigns. He has led the program to five Patriot League Championship Series appearances, including the team’s historic title run last year.

In 2017, Holy Cross went 4-0 in the Patriot League Tournament, with series sweeps of Army West Point and Bucknell. Holy Cross then made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1978, competing in the Corvallis Regional at Oregon State. The Crusaders earned a 7-4 victory over No. 25 Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament, eliminating the Huskers from the postseason.

Pine and DiCenzo have also released the Crusaders’ 2018 schedule, which will feature a total of 17 games to be played at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, as well as six games against 2017 NCAA Tournament qualifiers.

Holy Cross kicks off its season in Texas, where the Crusaders will play three games against Houston on Feb. 16-18. They will then travel to Oklahoma to face the Sooners and Valparaiso in four games from Feb. 23-25. The team will begin the month of March at Mercer for a three-game series running from March 3-5 before facing Georgia Southern on March 6 and Charleston Southern for three games March 9-11.

The Crusaders return to New England on March 13, when they will take on Boston College on the road. Holy Cross will then play a doubleheader at Northeastern on March 17 before hosting the Huskies in the team’s home opener on March 18. Other non-conference home games include UMass Lowell (March 21), Harvard (March 28), Rhode Island (April 11) and UConn (April 24).

The 2018 Patriot League season will differ from past campaigns, with each team playing at every school. Holy Cross will begin its Patriot League slate on the road with Navy and Bucknell in the same weekend, facing the Midshipmen in two games on March 24 and the Bison in a doubleheader on March 25. During the conference season, the Crusaders will also travel to Lehigh (March 31-April 1), Lafayette (April 21-22) and Army West Point (April 28-29).

The Crusaders will host their first Patriot League series with three games against Navy on April 7-8 in Worcester. Holy Cross will also host Bucknell (April 14-15), Army West Point (April 18), Lafayette (May 5) and Lehigh (May 6).

The Patriot League Tournament is scheduled to begin on May 12-13 with the semifinals, then conclude with the championship series on May 18-20.
