Men's Hockey Edged by No. 19 Union
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by No. 19 Union on Saturday night at Messa Rink, 4-2.
The Crusaders (6-6-6, 5-2-5 AHC) opened and closed the first period with a goal. Spencer Trapp scored less than two minutes into the game and Scott Pooley added to the Crusader lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first. Union (10-7-0, 6-2-0 ECAC) responded with a two-goal second period. The Dutchmen scored at 5:55 on the power play and at 19:36 to send the game into the third period tied, 2-2.
Union tallied the go-ahead goal at 17:44 of the third period and added an empty netter to take the game, 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1-0 HC (1st, 01:54, EV): Union’s goaltender Darion Hanson wrapped the puck around the boards that made its way to the point for Spencer Trapp to pick up, uncontested. Trapp walked the blue-line and then sent a wrist shot through traffic and just under the cross bar.
2-0 HC (1st, 18:58, EV): After an offensive zone faceoff, the Holy Cross forecheck forced a Dutchmen turnover. Michael Laffin scooped up the puck along the half wall and quickly fed a wide-open Scott Pooley in the high slot. Pooley fired the puck past Hanson’s glove for his 14th of the season.
2-1 UC (2nd, 5:55, PP): Union’s Jack Adam’s collected a rebound and scored on the back post after a flurry of shots on Berrafato.
2-2 UC (2nd, 19:36, EV): After a scrum in front of Berrafato, Cole Maier backhanded the puck through traffic from the high slot.
3-2 UC (3rd, 17:44, EV): Connor Light’s shot bounced off the boards behind the net and Ryan Scarfo backhanded the puck over Berrafato’s pad on the near post.
4-2 UC (3rd, 18:45, EN): A blocked shot in the Crusader offensive zone led to a Dutchmen rush and Ryan Walker scored on the empty net.
- Scott Pooley scored his team-best 14th goal of the season.
- Through two periods, Holy Cross blocked 20 shots. The Crusaders finished with a total of 27 blocked shots.
- With 53 goals in the 2017-18 season, Spencer Trapp’s unassisted goal is the just fifth time the Crusaders have scored an unassisted tally.

The Crusaders will return to action with a home-and-home series on Dec. 29-30 with Sacred Heart. On Dec. 29, the teams will face-off at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. and at the Hart Center on Dec. 30 at 7:05 p.m.
