Holy Cross Drops Two Games Against Oklahoma And Valparaiso

NORMAN, Okla. – The Holy Cross baseball team was edged by Oklahoma 1-0 on Saturday afternoon before falling to Valparaiso 20-6 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

GAME ONE

Four different Crusaders registered hits for Holy Cross, but they were unable to bring a runner across the plate as they fell to the Sooners. Cade Harris led the offense for Oklahoma, hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kyle Mendenhall registered the only RBI of the game while hitting 1-for-3 for the Sooners. 

Junior Pat McGowan had a solid outing for Holy Cross, allowing just one run on four hits through 6.1 innings pitched while tossing five strikeouts. Junior Danny Barlok pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit while adding a pair of strikeouts. Jake Irwin earned the win for Oklahoma, pitching 6.0 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Holy Cross began the top of the first inning with back-to-back hits from sophomore Jared Enders and senior Thomas Russo, but the Sooners defense was able to prevent the Crusaders from scoring.
  • After Harris led off with a double in the bottom of the first, Mendenhall registered an RBI single to bring home the lone run of the game.
  • McGowan and the Holy Cross defense put together a solid three innings, allowing just one Sooner to reach base in that time.
  • In the eighth inning, Oklahoma threatened to increase its lead with the bases loaded, but Barlok forced the final batter to pop out and end the inning, keeping it a one run game.

GAME TWO

Sophomore Austin Masel and senior Cam O'Neill both led the Crusaders offense against Valparaiso, with each hitting 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Russo hit 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while junior Alex Gionis hit 1-for-2 with a run scored. Freshman Peter Dudunakis also registered an RBI while hitting 2-for-4. Valpo’s offense was led by Zach Leone, who batted 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs and four runs scored. 

Sophomore Zane Hedaya took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings of action. Jon Tieman earned the win for Valpo, allowing two runs on six hits while tossing three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Valpo went up 1-0 in the first inning following a solo home run from Sam Shaikin.
  • After Holy Cross held the opposing Crusaders scoreless through the next two innings, Valpo opened up the scoring in the fourth to score five runs on two hits.
  • The opposing Crusaders kept the offense rolling with eight runs in the fifth inning, and four more runs in the sixth.
  • Holy Cross responded in the sixth inning to add a pair of runs on three hits. O’Neill brought home Masel with an RBI double while Dudunakis singled to bring O’Neill across the plate.
  • The Crusaders also scored three runs in the seventh, as Masel drove in two runners with a single, and Russo scored on an error.
  • After Valpo added two more runs in the eighth, Holy Cross added the final run of the evening as O’Neill hit an RBI single to score Russo in the ninth.

  • Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, as the Crusaders take on Oklahoma at 11:00 a.m.
