Volleyball Earns Spot in NCAA Team Works Challenge
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross volleyball team earned a spot in Helper Helper's “March Madness” style bracket that lets 64 NCAA Division I, Division II, and Division III teams compete head-to-head to see who can have the greatest impact in their community.
Over the course of the 2017-18 school year, the volleyball team has been participating in the NCAA® Team Works™ Challenge. This challenge is run by the NCAA and Helper Helper, a student-athlete engagement platform that helps schools organize community service effors with student-athletes. Since the start of the academic year, the volleyball team has completed 797 hours of community service.
Junior Allie Barry has helped the team coordinate the projects in and around Worcester.
“Some of my favorite community service projects have been our dig pink breast cancer game and holiday shopping for breast cancer patients," Barry said. "Seeing the projects impact the local community here in Worcester has meant a lot to our team and our program especially with Melissa, our head coach, going through the fight with breast cancer."
Barry enjoys the opportunities that her team gets to share together by working for the Worcester community. This challenge is designed to highlight those teams and student-athletes that go out of their way to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
"Teams who do dig pink matches often send the funds to the national side out foundation," Barry explained. "But to be able to see our efforts going to a local cause and to help people in our community made us feel more connected to what we were doing."
The Crusaders will go against the Georgian Southern women’s tennis team in the Sweet Sixteen of the competition. Holy Cross defeated the CSU-Monterey Bay softball team and the Georgian Court women's soccer team in the first and second rounds. The winner of each week is determined by the number of volunteer hours logged on the Helper Helper platform and their team’s participation percentage. The winners of the NCAA® Team Works™ Challenge will be announced at the end of competition on March 31.
