Caitlin Harty To Receive Cooney Award
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Caitlin Harty, a member of the Holy Cross women’s soccer team, has been selected as the 2017-2018 winner of the Honorable John P. Cooney Memorial Award. Presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club in memory of Judge John P. Cooney (Class of 1923), the Cooney Award goes to a senior letterwinner who performed beyond all expectations with courage, loyalty and dedication.
After ranking third on the team in scoring as a freshman with eight points on three goals and two assists, Harty was sidelined for her entire sophomore year due to a serious heart condition. She stayed connected with the team during this time, attending every practice, cheering on the team, and keeping a determined mindset while going through a series of procedures, tests and scares with her own health.
Harty came back stronger than ever as a junior, proving to be one of the fittest players on the team and a consistent contributor on the field. She played in all 17 games with 14 starts during her junior year, scoring one goal. Harty then appeared in all 17 games with five starts as a senior, recording one assist.
Also a standout the classroom, Harty was a four-time selection to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. She has been named to the Dean’s List and is a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society and the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society. In addition, Harty is active in the community, serving as a communion minister with the Campus Liturgical Ministry, a teaching assistant and tutor with the Worcester Public Schools and a coach with the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Goals Program.
Harty will be presented with the Cooney Award at the 63rd annual Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame Dinner & Ceremonial Banquet, to be held on Saturday, April 28, in the Hogan Campus Center. Tickets are still available for the event for only $65.00, and can be purchased by clicking here.
