Men's Hockey Announces 2017-2018 Awards

WORCESTER, Mass. The Holy Cross men’s hockey team has announced its team awards for the 2017-2018 season. The awards were presented at the team’s annual banquet at the Hogan Campus Center on Friday, May 4. The Crusaders also honored their nine graduating seniors: Paul Berrafato, Ryan Ferrill, Danny Lopez, T.J. Moore, Brett Mulcahy, Tommy Muratore, Jack Parsons, Scott Pooley, and Matt Scarth.

The Most Valuable Player Award went to senior goaltender Paul Berrafato, who appeared in all 36 games in the 2017-18 season. He was an All-Atlantic Hockey First Team selection and a Walter Brown Award semifinalist. In 36 games played, Berrafato made 1060 saves and played in 2172:37 minutes to take the single-season record at Holy Cross. Berrafato’s 1060 saves ranks second all-time at Holy Cross in single-season saves. He finished the season with a .919 save percentage and five shutouts. Berrafato captured both the all-time shutout record (11) and the single season shutout record (5) at Holy Cross. In his career, Berrafato played in 114 games and started 102 consecutive games.

The Glenn “Spike” Crane Memorial Award went to senior forward Ryan Ferrill. The Crane Award is given to the player who excels most in the little things and leads his teammates by example. Ferrill also took home the Crane Award at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. The senior forward tallied 28 goals and 33 assists in his career with 16 points coming in his senior campaign. Ferrill tallied six goals and 10 assists in the 2017-18 season.

Senior captain Brett Mulcahy was named the team’s Seventh Player Award winner. The Seventh Player Award is given to the unsung hero of the team. In his senior season, Mulcahy played in 31 games and recorded eight points on five goals and three assists. Of his five goals, three served as game-winners.

The Rookie of the Year went to Logan Ferguson. Ferguson appeared in 35 games, putting up 10 points on eight assists and two goals. His 10 points led the freshman class.

Spencer Trapp received the Michael P. Quinn Defensive Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Trapp led the team’s defensive scoring with 16 points on three goals and 13 assists in 33 games played. He finished the year with the second best plus/minus on the team at +4. In his career, Trapp has played in 103 games played, amassing nine goals and 40 assists for 49 points.

The team’s Most Improved Player is sophomore defenseman Dalton Skelly. He appeared in 22 games for the Crusaders, putting up two goals and three assists for five points. For his career, Skelly has played in 46 games and scored three goals and eight assists for 11 points.

The Dr. James M. Stewart Memorial Coach's Award was awarded to Michael Laffin. The Coach’s Award is given for commitment, leadership, and performance. Laffin played in all 36 games to rank third on the team in points with 28. He scored the second most goals on the team (13) and added the second most assists (15). Laffin led the team in plus/minus at +6. The junior forward added three power play goals and two game-winning goals in the 2017-18 season.

For the second straight year, junior forward Mitch Collett has earned the Academic Achievement Award. With a 3.89 GPA as a physics major, Collett played in 31 games and tallied six goals and five assists for 11 points. The junior also scored the team’s only shorthanded goal of the season.

The program added a new award, the Community Service Award, which was given to junior goalie Tommy Nixon for his efforts as the Lead Site Development Director and Associate Director of Inventory for Working for Worcester.  He is also a committee member for PowerPlay Points for Pink, raising money for Pink Revolution and the UMass Memorial Medical Center. Nixon has also served as the team’s captain for Relay for Life.
