Holy Cross Signs Two To National Letters Of Intent

Holy Cross Athletics   05-10-2018

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody announced today that two student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Crusaders. Marlon Hargis (Mays Landing, N.J.) and Blake Verbeek (Grand Rapids, Mich.) will join the Holy Cross program in the fall of 2018.

“We will be adding a pair of outstanding young men to our program with these signings,” said Carmody. “They are two very competitive guys who are skilled and athletic, with the ability to dribble, pass and shoot. They should make an immediate impact on our program in the fall.”

Hargis is a 6-foot-7, 195-pound guard, who played for head coach Paul Rodio at St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, N.J. He averaged 19.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game during his senior season, while leading the Hermits to an overall record of 21-7 and their fourth straight Cape Atlantic League American Conference title. Hargis earned first team all-league and all-area honors as a senior, in addition to being named the Daily Journal Player of the Year. He also helped St. Augustine Prep to the 2016 New Jersey Non-Public A state championship, two Non-Public A South Jersey titles and three overall Cape Atlantic League championships. Hargis scored over 1,000 points in his career and is the winningest player in the history of St. Augustine Prep with 108 victories.

Verbeek is a 6-foot-10, 190-pound forward, who played for head coach Ryan Stevens at Calvin Christian High School in Grandville, Mich. He earned first team Class C all-state honors as a senior, after averaging 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while making 48 percent of his field goal attempts, 42 percent of his three-pointers and 84 percent of his free throws. A three-time all-conference selection, Verbeek scored over 1,000 career points and led Calvin Christian to a state runner-up finish in 2016. In addition, he placed second in the 2018 state of Michigan free throw shooting contest and played AAU ball for the Grand Rapids Storm.
