Men's Hockey Fundraises through Power Play Points for Pink
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team raised $11,000 through its yearlong initiative ‘Power Play Points for Pink’.
The ‘Power Play Points for Pink’ initiative is in its third year where funds are pledged for every power play goal the Crusaders score in the Hart Center. In the 2017-2018 season, Holy Cross scored nine power play goals at home. Through the season, the team raised $11,000.
“My teammates and I are incredibly fortunate to be where we are in life, so as a team, it is inspiring to see us use our platform as Division I athletes to help others,” said Tommy Nixon about the team’s fundraising efforts. “I attribute part of our ongoing success with this fundraiser to Holy Cross for teaching us to be men and women for and with others. The biggest part of our success is due to the great group of guys we have and the limitless support we get from our coaches.”
The money raised by the team has been presented to PINK Revolution. PINK Revolution’s mission is to celebrate the lives of those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer; support those who currently battle breast cancer; and to make pervasive change in the future of breast cancer by paving a path to a cure and beyond. The mission will be accomplished by support of early detection and prevention strategies; by providing psychosocial care, by funding basic science and clinical research advancements; and with the promotion of survivorship programs in central Massachusetts, in conjunction with the UMass Memorial Breast Center and affiliate hospitals.
The funds raised by the team were presented by Power Play Points for Pink Chair, Tommy Nixon, on May 23 at the UMass Memorial Medical Center. Nixon presented the check to Pink Revolution’s Audrey Kurlan-Marcy and the doctors at the Comprehensive Breast Center.
“Going to the hospital and presenting the check was an incredible experience for me,” said Nixon about the experience. “The impact of the fundraising was evident on the faces of patients in the waiting room as I walked past with the check. It shows how big of an impact the work we are doing has on their lives. Then, seeing how excited the doctors and surgeons were when we presented the check further illustrated how important this fundraiser is to their ability to treat patients and conduct research.”
In conjunction with the men’s hockey team, HC for a Cure raised $9,000 over the year through its annual Benching for Breast Cancer fundraiser that was held on Dec. 8, 2017. The money HC for a Cure raised was also donated to PINK Revolution. Together, Holy Cross students raised $20,000 for PINK Revolution over the course of the 2017-2018 school year.
“With cancer being so common in some shape or form, it is an amazing feeling to be able to support those who are currently in the fight, as well as helping researchers learn how to prevent more people from getting a cancer diagnosis,” said Nixon. “I am already excited to get next year going, especially after going to the hospital and being able to quantify how big of a difference this money will make in people’s lives.”
