Baseball Seeks First Patriot League Title Against Bucknell

The Holy Cross baseball team will look to win its first Patriot League Championship this weekend, as it hosts Bucknell on Friday and Saturday at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUSADERS

  • The Crusaders finished the regular season with a 19-25 record and a 12-8 mark in Patriot League play, earning the second seed in the conference tournament.
  • Holy Cross makes its second-straight appearance in the Patriot League Championship series, and fifth all-time, after defeating Army West Point in two games in the semifinal round this past Saturday. To read the semifinal recap, click here.
  • Freshman Austin Masel leads the Crusaders with a batting average of .310 on the season and 32 runs scored on the year. He also ranks third on the team with 25 RBIs and a .427 slugging percentage.
  • Junior Cam O'Neill leads the Crusaders with 41 runs batted in and nine home runs on the season. He has also notched 28 runs scored while posting a slugging percentage of .443.
  • Senior Anthony Critelli has also had a strong season at the plate, ranking third on the team with a .289 batting average. He leads the team with a .490 slugging percentage, driving in 28 runs while scoring 25 runs and hitting nine doubles.
  • Senior Brendan King leads the Crusaders' starting rotation with a 4.02 ERA through 65.0 innings pitched. In 12 starts he has tallied 47 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .222 batting average.

FOUR EARN ALL-LEAGUE SELECTIONS

  • Four members of the Holy Cross baseball team earned spots on the 2017 All-Patriot League teams, as voted on by the coaches of the conference.
  • Critelli was named first team All-Patriot League for the third-straight season.
  • Senior George Capen, junior Thomas Russo and Masel all earned second team honors. Masel also earned the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award.

CRAVERO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE

  • Senior pitcher Joe Cravero was named Academic All-Patriot League, as announced by the league on Friday.

CRITELLI NAMED A FINALIST FOR THE SENIOR CLASS AWARD

  • Critelli was one of 10 student-athletes in the nation to be named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award on May 3.

SCOUTING THE BISON

  • Bucknell enters the championship with a record of 21-26, and went 10-10 in Patriot League play during the regular season.
  • The Bison make their first appearance in the championship since 2014, when they won the title with two wins over Lehigh.
  • They defeated No. 1-seeded Navy in the semifinal round, holding the Midshipmen to just one run in two games.
  • Brett Smith leads the Bison offense, batting .323 with 36 runs scored and 22 RBIs. He has also tallied 16 doubles on the year.
  • Connor Van Hoose has been one of the top starting pitchers for Bucknell all season, posting a 2.38 ERA in 75.2 innings pitched. In 12 starts he has tallied 90 strikeouts and posted a record of 6-5.
  • Head coach Scott Heather is in his fifth season with the Bison.
