Volleyball drops the last game of the St. John's Jack Kaiser Classic to Sacramento State.

The Crusaders trailed the Hornets most of the first set. A block by junior middle hitter Kristen Somerville and junior middle blocker Allie Barry made the score 21-17, but the Hornets were able to control the lead and win the first set 25-19.

The Hornets kept the Crusaders’ lead small throughout the second set. Holy Cross started strong opening on a 6-2 lead and kept their momentum going throughout the set. After another block by Somerville and Barry, the Crusaders extended the lead to 9-6. With her third ace of the tournament, freshmen libero Sophie VanSeveren gave the Crusaders a 12-7 lead. Kills from freshman middle blocker Clare Honan and freshman setter Kathleen Philo pushed the Crusaders’ lead to 15-13. After an attacking error from the Hornets, the Crusaders jumped to a 16-13 lead. Freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins notched her seventh kill of the match, leading all players, and extended the lead to 17-14. The Hornets would work back to tie the set 17-17, but the Crusaders were able to capture the second set, 25-22.

Sacramento State controlled the remaining sets winning both, 25-18 and 25-20 and took the match 3-1.

 WOMAN OF THE MATCH

  • Kerins ended the match with 14 kills, 15 digs and two aces, recording her first double-double. The freshmen middle hitter finished the tournament with 42 kills, 32 digs, 3 aces, 7 block assists and two assists total. She was also named to the Jack Kaiser Classic All-tournament team.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kerins finished one kill behind Sacramento State’s Mikaela Nocetti who finished with 15 leading all players.

  • Philo tallied 35 assists, 20 digs, four kills and an ace for the Crusaders and recorded her first career double-double. The freshman setter finished the tournament with 59 assists total.

  • Somerville notched seven blocks and led all players against the Hornets.

  • VanSeveren posted 29 digs led all players in the category.

  • Honan had 11 kills with a .391 hitting percentage.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders will take on Fairleigh Dickinson Sept. 1 for the first home match of the season. The first serve is set for 7:35 p.m. and will be the third match of the day in the Holy Cross Invitational Tournament.
