Three Crusaders Named Preseason All-Patriot League

WORCESTER, Mass. – Three members of the Holy Cross baseball team were named Preseason All-Patriot League, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches and media relations directors. Sophomore Austin Masel, junior Danny Barlok and senior Thomas Russo all earned preseason honors. In addition, the Crusaders were selected to finish third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.

Masel is coming off a stellar freshman season in which he earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, and was named Second Team All-Patriot League. He was also named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Masel appeared in all 53 games for Holy Cross in 2017 and led the team in hits with 58 while posting a 2.90 batting average. He also tallied 27 RBI and notched a slugging percentage of .410.

Barlok pitched 19.2 innings while making 16 appearances in relief in 2017. He posted a 5.95 ERA while recording 15 strikeouts for the season. In his career, Barlok has appeared in 31 games on the mound with three starts. In 54.2 innings he has posted an ERA of 4.77 and a record of 3-3. He has also totaled 42 strikeouts in two seasons.

Russo, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2017, appeared in all 53 games at third base on the year. He recorded a .272 batting average while notching an on-base percentage of .360. Russo tallied 22 RBI for the season and posted 44 hits. In his career, he has appeared in 112 games with 104 starts. In that time, Russo has scored 51 runs, driven in 42 scores and tallied 15 extra-base hits. He holds a career batting average of .269 and an on-base percentage of .348.

The Crusaders, the defending Patriot League Champions, were selected to finish third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Holy Cross received 29 points in the voting process with two first-place votes. Bucknell, the 2017 conference runner-up, was selected to finish first with 43 points and six first-place votes. Navy was voted second with 38 points in the voting process with four first-place votes. Lehigh was selected fourth with 27 points, while Army West Point was voted fifth with 25 points and Lafayette was selected sixth with 18 points.

The Crusaders will begin their 2018 season on Feb. 16, as they compete in the first contest of a three-game weekend series at Houston.
