Crusaders Deliver 3-1 Victory Over Niagara In Weekend Opener

THE LEAD: Sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp, junior forward Danny Lopez and sophomore forward Peter Crinella each scored a goal for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated Niagara, 3-1, on Friday night at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex in Worcester, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At 2:55 of the first period, Trapp received a pass from junior defenseman Tommy Muratore just in front of the blue line and took a slap shot that found the right side of the net, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
  • With 0.2 seconds left in the period, junior forward Danny Lopez fired a wrist shot past Guillame Therien’s glove side from the top of the left face-off circle to give the Crusaders a 2-0 advantage.
  • Holy Cross outshot Niagara 11-6 in the first period.
  • At 13:02 in the second, Niagara got on the board with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle by Caleb Boman, making it a 2-1 contest.
  • Holy Cross had 12 shots on goal in the second period, while Niagara posted six.
  • At 9:46 of the third period, Niagara’s Kris Spriggs had a breakaway and made a move on junior goalie Paul Berrafato, but came up short as Berrafato made the save to keep the score at 2-1 in favor of the Crusaders.
  • At 11:45 of the third, Crinella knocked in the puck from in front of the net off a rebound from a shot by junior forward Scott Pooley, giving the Crusaders a 3-1 victory.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Purple Eagles 12-7 in the third period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Holy Cross had 35 shots on goal, while Niagara took 19.
  • Berrafato posted 18 saves for the Crusaders to earn the victory, while Therien had 32 for the Purple Eagles.
  • Holy Cross went 0-2 on the power play, and Niagara went 0-4 on its power play attempts.
  • The Crusaders won 35 face-offs, while the Purple Eagles won 19.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Crusaders are now 14-9-1 all-time against the Purple Eagles (8-6-0 at home).
  • Lopez has posted at least one point in 17 of the 19 games this season. He leads the team with 12 goals and 21 points. His goal was his third game winner of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • The Crusaders are 6-3-2 at home this season.
  • Holy Cross improves to 2-0-1 against Niagara on the season.
