Baseball Earns 5-4 Victory Over California-Riverside

The Lead: The Holy Cross baseball team earned its first win of the season, defeating UC Riverside by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday night in their final game with the Highlanders.


  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as junior Cam O'Neill hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home freshman Austin Masel.
  • After the Highlanders added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, the Crusaders responded with a tying run in the third off an RBI ground out by O’Neill to score sophomore Travis Cloney.
  • Holy Cross regained its lead in the fifth, as junior Thomas Russo notched two RBIs on a double that brought home O’Neill and Masel.
  • Riverside responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up at 4-4.
  • Freshman Chris Rinaldi brought home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as he singled to center field to bring home sophomore Kellen McCormick.
  • Senior George Capen then pitched four scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Crusaders.


  • The Highlanders outhit Holy Cross 13-11.
  • The Crusaders left seven runners on base, while UC Riverside left 11.
  • Capen earned the win for Holy Cross, allowing no runs on six hits through 4.1 innings pitched in relief.
  • Trenton Toplikar took the loss for UC Riverside, allowing three runs on five hits.
  • Masel led the Crusaders offense, hitting 3-for-4 on the night with two runs scored.


  • Holy Cross is back in action tomorrow, March 8, as the Crusaders take on Cal State Northridge at 5:00 p.m. eastern time.
