Crusaders Conclude Action At Florida Gulf Coast Invitational

The Lead: The Holy Cross softball team led the way through the first four innings, but the Crusaders fell to Ball State, 5-3 in their third game of the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational on Wednesday.


  • Holy Cross started off strong, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on five hits. Junior first baseman Taylor Moss plated the first two runs on a single smashed down the right field line before junior left fielder Gabby Muniz brought in the third run on a double to center field to increase the Crusaders’ lead to 3-0.
  • Holy Cross held its three-run lead up until the bottom of the third inning when Ball State narrowed the gap to one run on two hits to make it a 3-2 game.
  • Ball State took over the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a triple hit by Kennedy Wynn, followed by a single to left field by Amanda Arnett, giving them a 4-3 edge.
  • Ball State used two hits to tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to move out to a 5-3 advantage, as the Crusaders were unable to overcome the deficit.


  • Ball State led 9-7 in hits.
  • Holy Cross left six runners on base, while Ball State left eight.
  • Junior pitcher Katy Watson pitched two innings and took the loss for Holy Cross.
  • Alyssa Rothwell secured the win for the Cardinals, pitching 4.2 innings and recording three strikeouts.


  • Sophomore pitcher Olivia Sloane notched a career-best three strikeouts.

The Lead: The Holy Cross softball team outhit Florida Gulf Coast, 6-4, but the Crusaders fell to the Eagles, 3-0 to conclude action at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational on Wednesday night.


  • After three scoreless innings, the Eagles broke the tie, scoring the first run on a squeeze bunt hit by Bri Innamorato who picked up the RBI.
  • The Crusaders trailed by three runs after the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Eagles platted another two runs on three hits.
  • Holy Cross battled back in the top of the seventh inning, getting runners on base, as junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy smashed a single to shortstop and freshman catcher Sydney Burr cranked a line drive towards the left side for another single. However, the Eagles found the outs to secure the 3-0 win.


  • Hits were 6-4 in favor of Holy Cross.
  • Sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held pitched the entire game for Holy Cross, earning a pair of strikeouts but took the loss.
  • Riley Randolph pitched a full seven innings for Florida Gulf Coast and tallied six strikeouts to earn the win.


  • Moss is on a seven-game hitting streak. She has tallied at least one hit in eight of nine games on the season. She leads the Crusaders with a .462 batting average and has 12 hits and 10 RBIs this year.


  • The action in Florida continues from Mar. 10-12, as Holy Cross is set to compete in five games at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. The Crusaders will open the tournament with two games on Mar. 10, facing South Dakota State at 11:30 a.m. and Southern Illinois Edwardsville at 4:30 p.m.
