Softball Defeated By Western Michigan And Canisius At Under Armour Showcase

The Lead: The Holy Cross softball team was outhit by Western Michigan by a 12-2 margin, as the Crusaders suffered a 15-0 loss to the Broncos on Saturday morning at the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross trailed 1-0 after the first inning, as the Broncos notched a run on a sacrifice fly hit to center field by Kelsea Cichocki.
  • Western Michigan extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third inning, using a five-run spurt on four hits.
  • Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the third inning with a hit by junior left fielder Gabby Muniz, but the Crusaders ended the inning leaving two runners on base.
  • Western Michigan then went on an offensive surge and scored nine more runs, adding seven runs in the fourth inning, before plating their final two runs in the fifth inning to take the 15-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Muniz and senior second baseman Emily Krisanda each went 1-for-2 at the plate, both posting base hits.
  • Western Michigan was led by Cichoski who tallied three hits, three runs and three RBIs.
  • The Broncos led 12-2 in hits.
  • Holy Cross left five runners on base, while Western Michigan left two.
  • Junior pitcher Katy Watson took the loss for Holy Cross after pitching the first two innings.
  • Holly Vantilburg earned the win for Western Michigan pitching the first three innings.

The Lead: Trailing 13-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Holy Cross softball team got the bases loaded and rallied for two runs, but couldn’t get the edge, as the Crusaders were defeated by Canisius, 13-3, in Clearwater, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders were down 3-0 after the first inning, as Canisius scored on three hits and an error to take an early lead.
  • The Golden Griffins moved out to a 6-0 advantage in the third inning after bringing home three more runs on three hits and another error.
  • Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the third inning, recording a run on a single hit up the middle by junior catcher Savannah Young to close the gap to five runs with the score, 6-1.
  • However, Canisius went on an offensive frenzy, plating four runs on two hits and an error in the fourth inning before bringing home three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to move out to a 13-1 lead.
  • Holy Cross battled back for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, fueled by a base hit to left field hit by Muniz, a single on a bunt by Held and an RBI single notched by senior right fielder Kylee Malouf. Held then crossed home plate on a wild pitch. However, the Golden Griffins fended off the Crusaders’ rally, as Canisius secured the 13-3 five-inning win.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hits were 10-5 in favor of Canisius.
  • Both sides left five runners on base.
  • Sophomore pitcher Olivia Sloane pitched 3.1 innings and took the loss for Holy Cross.
  • Erika Mackie threw for the full five innings to pick up the win for Canisius.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders conclude action at the Under Armour Showcase tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. game against Indiana State.
