Softball Splits Doubleheader With Marist In Home Opener

GAME ONE

Score: Holy Cross 9, Marist 3

The Lead: Four different Crusaders batted over .300, as the Holy Cross softball team took down Marist, 9-3, in game one of its 2017 home opener on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • It rained throughout the first inning, as Holy Cross capitalized on seven walks and jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs on three separate wild pitches before Marist walked a batter with the bases loaded.
  • Marist responded in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-1 game, using one hit, one error and a catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded.
  • The Crusaders battled back in the bottom half of the third inning to expand out to a 5-1 advantage, as sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler brought home freshman catcher Sydney Burr on a sacrifice fly hit to center field.
  • Marist plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing the gap to 5-3 temporarily, but Holy Cross rallied for the final five runs of the game.
  • After freshman right fielder Carley Boothe doubled to center field, Wahler picked up her second RBI of the day on another sacrifice fly hit to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Crusaders tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, using four hits and an error with junior first baseman Taylor Moss and Boothe picking up RBIs during this span, as Holy Cross secured the 9-3 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Boothe, who went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
  • Senior center fielder Kylee Malouf, junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy and sophomore pitcher Alexandra Held each went (1-for-3) at the plate for a .333 batting average.
  • Hits were 8-7 in favor of Marist.
  • Holy Cross left nine runners on base, while Marist left 15 base runners stranded.
  • Held threw for a full seven innings to earn the win for Holy Cross.
  • Brooke Peterson started the game in the circle for the Red Foxes, allowing four runs to take the loss.

Record: Holy Cross (6-20, 2-4 Patriot League); Marist (21-14, 3-3 MAAC)

The Lead: Senior second baseman Emily Krisanda and Burr each went 3-for-2 at the plate (.667), but the Holy Cross softball team fell to Marist, 7-2, in game two of the doubleheader in Worcester on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Marist took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Crusaders matched their run with a RBI single hit up the middle by Krisanda to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Red foxes then broke the tie and moved out to a 5-1 lead in the top of the second inning on a grand slam hit over the center field fence by Janna Korak.
  • Holy Cross plated one more run in the fourth inning on a RBI double hit to right field by Burr, but the Crusaders couldn’t get any closer, as Marist claimed the final two runs of the game and captured the 7-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Red Foxes led 7-6 in hits.  
  • The Crusaders left four runners on base, while Marist left 12.
  • Starting in the circle for Holy Cross and pitching the first 1.2 innings, sophomore pitcher Olivia Sloane took the loss. Pitching 4.1 innings was junior Katy Watson, who held a 1.62 ERA.
  • Megan Beirermeister pitched the first four innings for the Red Foxes and picked up the win, as Jayne Oberdorf pitched the final three innings and earned the save.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The last time Holy Cross defeated Marist was on April 23, 2014, when the Crusaders took down the Red Foxes, 5-4.
  • Krisanda led the Crusaders on the day, batting .429 (3-for-7) with one RBI, while Boothe batted .400 (2-for-5) with three RBIs. Burr also batted .400 (2-for-5) with two doubles and a .800 slugging percentage.
  • McCarthy has notched at least one hit in the past 11 of 13 games played, while Wahler has recorded at least one hit in the past nine of 11 games played. McCarthy has batted .421, while Wahler has batted .366 through the past 13 games.
  • Burr registered her second and third career doubles, as Boothe recorded her first career double.

  • The Crusaders hit the road tomorrow for a game against Brown in Providence, R.I. at 3:30 p.m.
