Field Hockey Falls To No. 22 Massachusetts In Season Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross field hockey team fell to No. 22 Massachusetts on Friday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. Both teams had a strong first half offensively, with each side notching three goals. The Crusaders were the first on the board as senior Maureen Connolly scored on a breakaway in the ninth minute. Junior Caroline Bono also found the back of the net in the 15th minute, as she scored with a sweeping shot off a centering pass from Connolly. In the 21st minute, junior Emily Loprete scored the third goal for Holy Cross with a deflection in the circle.

Sophomore Marcia LaPlante made eight saves in the first half, but UMass had an answer for each score for Holy Cross and tied the game at 3-3 before halftime. The Minutewomen put together a strong second half, notching five unanswered goals. UMass outshot the Crusaders 12-3 in the final 35 minutes, and scored on two of four penalty corner opportunities in the half.
