WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross field hockey team earned a 5-1 win over Lehigh in its first Patriot League game of the season on Friday night in Worcester. The Crusaders got out to an early lead in just the seventh minute of play, as junior Emily Loprete scored with a reverse shot in the center of the circle to make it 1-0. Lehigh scored an answering goal in the 31st minute with a rebound opportunity in front of the net to tie the game heading into halftime.

Holy Cross put together a stellar second half, scoring four unanswered goals. Senior Maureen Connolly found the back of the net first in the 38th minute, as she charged up the field on a breakaway and beat the goalkeeper with a deke to the forehand side. Junior Suzanne Noone then scored just one minute later off an assist from junior Lauren Ineson. In the 47th minute, Ineson added a goal off a penalty corner before freshman Courtney McMullen scored the final goal of the game in the 62nd minute. Despite Lehigh’s five shots on net in the second half, the Crusaders held off the Mountain Hawks and secured the win.

  • Sophomore Marcia LaPlante made nine saves in net for the Crusaders
  • Emma Gromacki made three saves for Lehigh, while Paige Innarella stopped one shot.
  • Connolly led the Crusaders with four shots.

  • This was the Crusaders’ first victory over Lehigh since Oct. 26, 2013, when Holy Cross defeated the Mountain Hawks 4-1.
  • Connolly has now notched at least one point in six straight games to start the season. This is also the fourth game this season she has tallied at least one goal and one assist.

  • The Crusaders return to action this Sunday, Sept. 17, as they play host to Temple at 12:05 p.m.
