Field Hockey Holds Off Vermont, Earns 1-0 Victory On The Road

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross field hockey team earned a 1-0 win over Vermont on Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders took the lead early over the Catamounts, as senior Maureen Connolly scored off an assist from junior Suzanne Noone to make it a 1-0 game. Holy Cross outshot Vermont 7-4 in the first half and maintained control of the game to head into the second half up by one.

Vermont responded with a strong offensive push in the second half. The Catamounts outshot Holy Cross 14-6 and earned three penalty corner opportunities in the half. Despite the added pressure from the Catamounts, sophomore Marcia LaPlante stopped nine shots on goal and played an integral role in helping the Crusaders’ defense hold on to the lead and secure the 1-0 victory.


  • Vermont outshot the Crusaders 18-13.
  • LaPlante made 10 saves in net for Holy Cross.
  • Lena Benwood stopped five shots on goal for the Catamounts.
  • Junior Emily Loprete led the Crusaders with six shots.


  • Connolly has notched at least one point in all eight games this season, and has scored at least one goal in seven games.
  • LaPlante earned the fifth shutout of her career, and her third of the season.


  • The Crusaders return to action this Saturday, Sept. 23, as Holy Cross plays host to Colgate at 12:05 p.m.
