Crusaders Suffer 77-60 Setback At Loyola Monday Night

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Lauren Manis posted 18 points to lead the Crusaders, but the Holy Cross women’s basketball team fell to Loyola (Md.) 77-60 on Monday night.

Manis shot 8-for-14 for Holy Cross (7-8, 2-2) and added nine rebounds in addition to her 18 points. Senior Katie Doherty also scored in double figures, adding 11 points while shooting 4-for-7. Senior Tricia Byrne notched six assists and added four steals. The Greyhounds (3-12, 1-3) were led by Stephanie Karcz, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 19 rebounds while adding four assists and four steals. Izzy Therien also had a strong night offensively, posting 18 points while shooting 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Loyola posted a 48-31 edge over Holy Cross in rebounding. The Crusaders shot 39.3% (24-61) from the field, while the Greyhounds shot 42.6% (26-61). Loyola made 69% of its free throws (20-29), as Holy Cross made 58.3% of its shots from the charity stripe (7-12).

WOMAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES

  • Following the game, Manis was selected as the Woman of the Match presented the United States Marines.
  • She notched 18 points and nine rebounds while hitting eight of 14 shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Loyola scored the first seven points of the game, and maintained a strong lead over the Crusaders through the first quarter to enter the second up 19-9.
  • The Greyhounds led by as many as 20 points in the second quarter, but Holy Cross posted a 7-0 run to close the half and cut the deficit to 35-22.
  • In the third quarter Loyola maintained a two-digit lead over the Crusaders, but Holy Cross posted seven-straight in the closing minutes and made it a ten-point game heading into the fourth.
  • After the Greyhounds increased their lead early in the final quarter, Holy Cross managed to get within 11 points, but could not get any closer as Loyola sealed the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Loyola posted 21 points off turnovers, while the Crusaders notched 16.
  • The Greyhounds scored 15 points on second-chance opportunities.
  • Loyola saw 84% (65 of 77) of its points scored from its starters, and played just two players off the bench.
