WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman guard Austin Butler scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to an 85-74 victory over Lafayette at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders improve to 7-14 on the season and 4-6 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Leopards fall to 5-16 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

Holy Cross hit 55.9 percent of its field goal attempts and 90.9 percent of its free throws on the day, while turning the ball over just seven times. The Crusaders also held Lafayette to 44.9 percent shooting from the floor, while forcing 13 turnovers.

Junior forward Jehyve Floyd finished with 17 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists, while junior forward Karl Charles totaled 12 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. The Leopards were led by Alex Petrie with 29 points and five rebounds.

                                                                                   

WEEKLY AWARDS:

  • Following the contest, Butler was selected as the Man of the Match presented by the United States Marines.
  • Butler also received the Martin J. O’Malley Award as the most outstanding player in Holy Cross’ Winter Homecoming game.
  • He hit 11 of 15 field goal attempts and five of eight three-pointers on the day.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the game hot, using runs of 13-4 and 10-2 to claim a 31-15 lead with 9:38 left in the first half.
  • Holy Cross was still up by 15 (35-20) with 6:26 to go before the break, before Lafayette scored 14 straight points to make it a one-point game (35-34).
  • But the Crusaders responded with a 14-3 spurt of their own to close out the half, and led 49-37 heading into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross was still up by 10 points (55-45) with 14:18 remaining, when the Leopards went on a 15-7 run to close the gap to two points (62-60) at the 10:12-mark.
  • The Crusaders then stepped up on defense, holding Lafayette scoreless for almost five minutes while scoring nine straight point to go back up by 11 (71-60).
  • The Leopards would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way, and Holy Cross hit five of six free throws in the final two minutes to pull out the victory.

  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Floyd made all eight of his field goal attempts, becoming only the third player in school history to make 100.0 percent of his shots from the floor with at least eight attempts.
  • The Crusaders set season highs for both points scored (85) and assists (22).
  • Holy Cross snapped a two-game losing streak on Winter Homecoming weekend, winning for the first time since 2015 (a 58-52 victory over Lehigh).
  • The crowd of 3,396 was the largest at the Hart Center this season.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Jan. 29, when it plays host to Lehigh at 7:05 p.m. The contest between the Crusaders and the Mountain Hawks will be shown live to a national audience on the CBS Sports Network.
