The Holy Cross football team returns to Fitton Field this Saturday, Sept. 30, when it plays host to Lafayette at 1:05 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend. The game between the Crusaders and the Leopards will be televised live by Charter TV3 and the Patriot League Network, and can be heard live on WEEI 1440 AM in Worcester.

Holy Cross stands 2-2 overall this year with a 1-0 mark in the Patriot League. The Crusaders own victories over No. 9 New Hampshire (51-26) and Bucknell (20-0), while falling to Connecticut (27-20) and Dartmouth (27-26 in overtime). Holy Cross currently ranks seventh in the nation in third down conversion defense (24.6 percent), 18th in passing offense (281.3 yards per game), 23rd in kickoff returns (23.7 yards per return) and 24th in turnover margin (+0.8 turnovers per game).

Senior quarterback Peter Pujals has led the Crusader offense by completing 95 of 175 passes for 1,125 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior wide out Blaise Bell has posted 26 receptions for 327 yards and four scores, while junior wide receiver Richie DeNicola has caught 13 passes for 142 yards. Senior tailback Diquan Walker leads the Holy Cross ground game with 170 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Nick McBeath leads the team with 45 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. Junior linebacker Ryan Brady has added 45 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss, while free safety Ahmad Tyler has recorded 24 tackles, one tackle for loss and five pass breakups.

Lafayette currently stands 0-4 overall this year, and has been outscored 166-53. The Leopards were defeated by Princeton 38-17 last Saturday, after previously dropping games to Villanova (59-0), Sacred Heart (38-24) and Monmouth (31-12).

Freshman quarterback Sean O’Malley has led Lafayette by completing 97 of 159 passes for 907 yards and seven touchdowns with seven interceptions. Senior tight end Dylan Wadsworth has a team-best 21 receptions for 156 yards and a score, while senior tailback DeSean Brown has carried 34 times for 94 yards. Defensively, senior linebacker Brandon Bryant has totaled 43 tackles with a sack and an interception. Senior linebacker Michael Root has added 32 tackles and a sack, with sophomore strong safety Yasir Thomas posting 28 tackles.

“We are excited to get back to Fitton Field for just the second time this season, with our Homecoming game on Saturday,” said Holy Cross head coach Tom Gilmore. “We only play six conference games in the Patriot League, which makes this week’s contest extremely important.”

After the contest with Lafayette, Holy Cross remains at home to face Monmouth on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1:05 p.m.
