Women's Rowing Announces Team Awards

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s rowing program has announced its team awards for the 2017-2018 season. Kate Hegermiller earned the Crusaders’ Helm Award, Caroline Quinn won the “Crewsader” Award, Tyler Sparling and Tessie Salatas each received the Fiercest Competitor Award, and the Coaches Award was given to Paige Cohen and Madeline Downey.


Hegermiller won the Crusaders’ Helm Award for the first time in her career. The award is named after the helmet that is worn by Crusaders, as well as the helm of a ship which gives the ship direction. This award is given to an athlete that becomes the best teammate by always following the “21 Ways to be a Great Teammate.”


As a sophomore, Hegermiller was a mainstay in the Crusaders’ varsity eight lineup and raced in the varsity eight boat in the Patriot League Championships. The sophomore was also selected as a CRCA Scholar-Athlete.


Caroline Quinn earned the team’s “Crewsader” Award, which is given to the student-athlete who shows her passion for rowing as well as the team by consistently going above and beyond, while encouraging her teammates to do the same.

Quinn served as a team captain and was a member of the varsity eight in each race through the 2017-2018 season for Holy Cross.


The Claire Scherer Fiercest Competitor Award was given to both Tyler Sparling and Tessie Salatas. Sparling, a junior and a consistent member of the varsity eight and was a member of the second varsity eight boat that placed sixth in the Grand Final at the 2018 Patriot League Championships. Sparling is a two-time CRCA National-Scholar and earned a spot on the Patriot League All-Academic team in the 2018 season. Salatas served as a team captain in the 2017-2018 season and raced in the varsity eight boat for each meet for Holy Cross.


Paige Cohen and Madeline Downey were both the recipients of the 2018 Coaches Award. As a freshman, Cohen sustained a spot in the varsity eight boat throughout the entire season. Downey was a member of the novice eight boat that claimed gold at the Knecht Cup.
