Men's Soccer Announces 2017 Freshman Class

WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head men’s soccer coach Marco Koolman has announced the freshman class for the 2017 season. Hunter Bartholomew (Fishers, Indiana), Max Benford (Ipswich, Mass.), Max Krause (Korschenbroich, Germany), Sean Merrick (Mississauga, Ontario), Edi Mujan (Revere, Mass.), Nick Rhodes (Del Mar, Calif.) and Jacob Wright (Alamo, Calif.) will join the Holy Cross program in the Fall of 2017.

“We are bringing in a variety of student-athletes with energy, high soccer IQ’s and some size as well,” said Koolman. “Student-athletes who, in their respective areas, have played for some very good teams. There will be members of this class that will be fighting for starting positions right away which pushes our returners. It will create a good balance between what we have and what we’re bringing in, further strengthening our team.”

Coach Koolman: “Hunter is an attack-minded defender. He is a student of the game and is always involved in the action. He links up well with his teammates around him and will contribute to the overall success of the team.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Four-year starting member of the Indiana Fire Academy in the United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) under head coach Phil Presser
  • He tallied 19 career assists with 12 in the 2015-2016 season
  • Member of National Honor Society

High School: Ipswich 

Coach Koolman: “Max is a great passer of the ball and will always get his teammates involved. He likes to get in the final third and has a strong ability to put the ball in the net.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Four-year member of the Ipswich varsity soccer team under head coach Greg Scruton
  • Captained the team in 2015 and 2016
  • Won the Cape Ann League All-Star Award all four years
  • In 2015 and 2016, won the Eastern Mass. All-Star Award
  • During the four years, scored a total of 41 goals and 26 assists
  • Member of the Aztec soccer team in the New England Premiership under head coach Mike Kersker
  • During the 2016 season, the team went to Nationals
  • Two-year member of the varsity tennis team under head coach John Tracy
  • Two-year member of the varsity indoor track and field team under head coach Martin Binette
  • Was a member of National Honor Society

Coach Koolman: “Max is a playmaker. He has a very high soccer IQ. He is creative and does a good job linking up with his teammates. His movement of the ball is very good and he has an eye for goal.”

  • Five-year member of the Monchengladbach club team under Head Coach Benedikt Weeks
  • Captained the team in 2015, 2016 and 2017
  • Was the top goal scorer in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016
  • In 2015, his team won the league championship
  • Since 2013, he has scored 83 goals in 85 games
  • In 2013, he scored 30 goals in 21 games

  • His father was a two-time national champion in German high school soccer

Height: 5’7”
Weight: 135
Hometown: Mississauga, Ontario
High School: Loyola Catholic 

Coach Koolman: “Sean is a very dynamic, energetic player. He has lots of creativity. In the the final third is where his game shines. He will connect well with his teammates but at the same time, he’s one of those guys who has an eye for goal.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Three-year member of the varsity soccer team at Loyola Catholic High School for Coach Roque
  • Captained the team in 2016
  • Posted 26 career goals
  • Led the team in assists during the 2015 season
  • Earned 2014-2015 All-League accolades
  • Member of the Sigma FC club team under head coach Bobby Smyrniotis
  • Captained the team during the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons
  • Posted 16 goals and 19 assists
  • During the 2016 season, team was the runner up in the Soccer Academy Alliance Canada (SAAC) U20 league

Coach Koolman: "Edi is very athletic. He has a good understanding of the game. He is a good defender and can play in the midfield. He has an attacking mind. Edi does well in front of the goal, especially with restarts.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Four-year member of the FC Boston Bolts in the US Soccer Development League under head coach Dan Colwell
  • During the 2015-2016 season, he started in all 25 games
  • Three-year member of the varsity indoor track and field team at Revere High School
  • Captained the team in 2016
  • In 2016, he was the top point scorer on the track team

  • Has one sister (Elma) 


Position: Defender
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Hometown: Del Mar, Calif.
High School: Cathedral Catholic High School

Coach Koolman: “Nick is a physical presence, that’s one of the things that stands out about him. His mindset is defending, so he will be a solid mainstay in the back four. He’ll add size and he’ll be competing with the rest of the returners for a starting spot.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Three-year member with the San Diego Surf under head coach Cody Worden
  • In his three years, he played 34 games with 27 starts

  • Father played volleyball at UC San Diego and mother was on the synchronized swimming team at Stanford
  • Has one sister (Katy)


Position: Defender
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 170
Hometown: Alamo, Calif.
High School: San Ramon Valley High School

Coach Koolman: "Jacob is a strong defender. He also likes to go forward and is a good passer of the ball. He connects well and can support the ball out of the back.”

Before Holy Cross:

  • Three-year member of the varsity soccer team at San Ramon Valley High School under Coach Don Busboom
  • Team captain during his senior year
  • During 2015, his team won the EBAL Championship and NCS Championship
  • For his career, he had six goals and four assists for 16 points
  • He earned second team All-League during 2015-2016 season
  • Member of the Diablo FC 98 Club Team under Coach Charlie Campbell
  • During the 2015-2016 season, his club team was the National Premier League 1 Fall Champion and was a State Cup Finalist in 2016
