Women's Lacrosse Surges Past Army, 15-7

The Lead: Junior Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) posted a career-best five goals, while senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) totaled six points for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team defeated the Army West Point Black Knights, 15-7, on Wednesday night on Holy Cross Field. The Crusaders improve to 2-1 in the Patriot League.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross came out firing as they scored the first three goals of the game. The first two were both scored by Ward off passes from Concilio and the next was scored by junior Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) off a pass from freshman Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.), making the score 3-0 with 21:42 left in the first half.
  • Eleven seconds later, Army snuck a goal in when Izzy McMahon scored off a pass from Amy Johnston making the score 3-1.
  • The Crusaders then came back to net another three goals to make the score 6-1, with 15:54 left in the first half. All three goals by the Crusaders were off free positions. The first was by Concilio, the next by freshman Alexis Leighton (Garden City, N.Y.) and the last by Stephanie Ford (Summit, N.J.).
  • Army posted another goal when McMahon scored but Holy Cross answered back when Ward tallied yet another goal off Concilio’s pass from behind the net, making the score 7-2 Crusaders.
  • The Black Knights then scored two unassisted goals, one by Nikki Polhamus and the other by Johnston. Freshman Baker Earl (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored off a free position shot making the score 8-4.
  • The last goal of the first half was scored by Rachel Treweeke off a pass from Rachel Hornick, making the score 8-5 Crusaders going into halftime.
  • In the first half, Holy Cross outshot Army 15-7, and had eight draw controls to the Black Knights’ seven. The Crusaders tallied eight ground balls to the Black Knights’ five.
  • Treweeke opened up the second half with a goal for the Black Knights but was answered back with four consecutive Crusader goals.
  • The first was by MacKay off Concilio’s pass, the second by Concilio off the free position, the next was tallied by Ward from senior MacKenzie Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md.) and the final goal in the sequence was from Connors. At the end of this four goal stride, the Crusaders were up 12-6 with 6:17 left in the game.
  • Treweeke scored again for Army yet the Black Knights couldn’t hold off the Crusaders from another run and they scored three consecutive goals. The first was by Ward, her fifth goal of the night, the next was tallied by MacKay off Connors’ assist, and the final goal of the game was netted by Connors, making the final score 15-7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both Holy Cross and Army tallied 14 ground balls.
  • The Crusaders outshot the Black Knights 30-20.
  • Sophomore goalie Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.). made eight saves, while Kayla Rowley posted 11 saves.
  • The Crusaders secured 15 draw controls to the Black Knights’ 10.
  • Holy Cross went 5-10 on free-position shots and Army went 2-5.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ward scored a career-best five goals and had her first hat-trick of the season and third of her career.
  • This was MacKay’s first hat-trick this season and the third of her career.
  • With her four assists, Concilio now has 62 career assists which are third all-time in program history.
  • Senior captain Casey Drollinger (Mountain, N.J.) now has 54 career caused turnovers which are seventh all-time.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to Patriot League action when they travel to Bucknell on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m.
