Women's Lacrosse Edged By BU, 10-9

The Lead:  With the game tied at 9-9, Mickenzie Larivee scored the game-winning goal for the Terriers with 2:55 left in the second half as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team fell to Boston University, 10-9, in Patriot League action on Wednesday.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross started off the game with a 2-0 lead against the Terriers. Goals were scored by senior Mary Patalita and freshman Audrey Mandaro.
  • With 23:35 remaining in the half, Kailey Conry netted a goal for Boston University bringing it to a 2-1 game.
  • Sophomore Baker Earl responded for the Crusaders with a goal at 22:54, and just 17 seconds later, Conry scored again for the Terriers.
  • With three consecutive goals, Holy Cross extended its lead to 6-2 with 8:33 remaining in the first half. Goals were scored by junior Kerianne Moran, Mandaro and senior Maddie Ward.
  • BU then answered with two more goals by Larivee and Taylor Hardison to close out the first half as the Terries trailed the Crusaders, 6-4.
  • The Terriers began the second half with three straight goals by Elisabeth Jayne, Mackenzie Howe and Larivee as BU took its first lead of the game at 7-6 with 16:09 remaining.
  • Just 14 seconds later, sophomore Keely Connors buried a goal to tie the game, 7-7. The game would remain back and forth as Hardison took the ball to the net for the Terriers to take an 8-7 lead only 22 seconds later.
  • Holy Cross scored two more goals in the game to lead 9-8. Goals were scored by Moran and freshman Emma Gill.
  • Kelly Matthews tied the game at 9-9 off of a free-position shot with 6:56 left.
  • To finish the game, Larivee netted her third goal into the net for the Terriers at 2:55 remaining as Boston University posted the 10-9 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Boston University outshot Holy Cross, 33-31.
  • Junior Julia Maloney made 15 saves and recorded a .600 save percentage for the Crusaders, while Caroline Meegan posted 12 for BU.
  • Boston University secured 12 draw controls, while the Crusaders posted 9.
  • The Terriers picked up 26 groundballs, while the Crusaders tallied 14.
  • Holy Cross went 2-3 on free-position shots, while BU went 1-6.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Maloney posted a career-best 15 saves. Her 260 career saves are ranked ninth all-time.
  • Patalita led the team with three points with one goal and two assists. She is ranked first on the team with 32 points and nine assists, while she is second with 23 goals.
  • Senior Anna Johnson now has a team-best 48 draw controls this season which are tied for fifth all-time in program history for a season. Her 26 caused turnovers are tied for sixth. Her 78 career draw controls are ranked tenth all-time

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the Turnpike Trophy competition. Go here for the schedule and results of the Turnpike Trophy.
  • Larivee was named MVP for today’s game as she posted a hat trick.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which has the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up will be on April 21, when the men’s lacrosse teams square off in Boston at 7:05 p.m. 

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 22, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to play Patriot League opponent American at 12:00 p.m.
