Women's Lacrosse Defeats American, 12-10

The Lead: With the game tied at 10-10 with 5:16 left in the second half, senior Mary Patalita posted two straight goals as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team defeated American, 12-10, in Patriot League action on Saturday. Patalita led the Crusaders with three goals and two assists for five points.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After American netted the first three goals of the game, the Crusaders answered by scoring four straight to take a 4-3 lead with 13:34 left in the first half. Patalita, sophomore Molly Pfaff and senior Maddie Ward each scored.
  • The Eagles then moved out to a 5-4 advantage by scoring two consecutive goals.
  • Sophomore Baker Earl tied the game at 5-5, but a goal by Madison Hoon with 3:38 remaining gave American a 6-5 lead at the half.
  • The Crusaders started the second half with three straight goals to take an 8-6 lead with 20:06 left. Ward, freshman Emma Gill and senior Avery Giorgio each found the back of the net.
  • After Amanda Medjid posted a goal for the Eagles, freshman Bryn Carroll recorded a goal.
  • But the Eagles responded with the two goals to tie the contest at 9-9 with 10:29 left.
  • The Crusaders took a 10-9 lead when junior Kerianne Moran scored on a free-position shot with 9:29 remaining.
  • Medjid then tied the game at 10-10 with 5:30 left, but just 14 seconds later Patalita found the back of the net as the Crusaders took an 11-10 lead.
  • Then with 4:07 remaining, Patalita netted her second straight goal and her third of the game to make it a 12-10 contest.
  • The Crusaders were able to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard for the 12-10 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot American, 31-27.
  • Junior Julia Maloney made seven saves for the Crusaders, while Fiona Geier posted 10 for American.
  • Holy Cross secured 14 draw controls, while the Eagles posted 10.
  • The Crusaders picked up 23 groundballs, while American tallied 22.
  • Holy Cross went 3-5 on free-position shots, while the Eagles went 7-11.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Patalita now has five career hat tricks. She leads the team with three game-winning goals this season.
  • Senior Anna Johnson has a team-best 51 draw controls this season which are tied for fourth all-time in program history for a season. Her 28 caused turnovers are also tied for fourth. Her 81 career draw controls are ranked ninth all-time.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will conclude the season on Saturday, April 29, when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate at 1:00 p.m.
