Women's Lacrosse Earns 11-8 Victory Versus Fairfield

Time: 11:00 a.m.

The Lead: Senior Mary Patalita led the team with five points on two goals and three assists, while seniors Maddie Ward and Tess MacKay each posted a hat trick as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team defeated Fairfield, 11-8, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Just 49 seconds into the game, Ward scored a goal for the Crusaders.
  • Fairfield responded with two straight goals by Lily Crager and Olivia Russell.
  • Holy Cross then answered with a five-goal streak to take a 6-2 lead. The goals were scored by freshman Bryn Carroll, Ward, Patalita, MacKay and freshman Maggie Moriarty.
  • Sulliman scored one more goal for the Stags with 36 seconds left to play in the first half.
  • The Crusaders took a 6-3 lead at the half.
  • Fairfield came out strong in the beginning of the second half with three straight goals by Brenna Connolly, Kathleen Hulseman and Crager to tie the game at 6-6 with 19:39 left in the second half.
  • At 19:02, Ward found the back of the net, and just 29 seconds later, Patalita scored another goal as the Crusaders took an 8-6 lead.
  • Freshman Emma Gill increased the lead to 9-6 when she scored for the Crusaders.
  • Sulliman ended the Crusaders’ scoring streak when she posted a goal with 15:23 left in the second half.
  • But then MacKay scored off of a pass from Patalita to make the score 10-7 with 10:35 left in the second half.
  • With 5:37 left in the half, Riley Hellstein found the back of the net to cut the lead to 10-8.
  • Just 36 seconds later, MacKay scored the final goal of the game to give the Crusaders the 11-8 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Fairfield outshot Holy Cross, 23-20.
  • Junior goaltender Julia Maloney made 10 saves to earn the victory, while Caleigh O’Connor posted five.
  • Holy Cross secured 13 draw controls, while Fairfield had six. Both teams picked up 31 ground balls.
  • The Crusaders went 2-7 on free-position shots, while the Stags went 5-12.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Moriarty and Gill both scored their first collegiate goal. Gill’s goal was the game winner.
  • Patalita posted a career-best three assists and five points.
  • The hat trick by MacKay was her first of the season and the fifth of her career.
  • Ward’s hat trick was her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
