Crusaders Impress With 10-0 Shutout Of Iona

The Lead: The Crusaders posted the second shutout in program history as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team defeated Iona, 10-0, on Saturday. Junior goalie Julia Maloney made six saves to record the shutout. Senior Maddie Ward scored three goals, while senior Tess MacKay and freshman Audrey Mandaro scored two goals each for the Crusaders. Freshman Maggie Moriarty had three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross came out strong in the first half with three straight goals. Goals were scored by Baker Earl, Bryn Carroll off a pass by senior Mary Patalita and Ward from a pass by sophomore Keely Connors.
  • The Crusaders held the Gaels scoreless in the first half of the game as Holy Cross took a 3-0 lead into the half.
  • Mandaro gave the Crusaders a 5-0 lead with two straight goals to start the second half, with one on a free-position shot and the second off a pass from Connors.
  • McDuffee then found the back of the net, while MacKay scored off a pass from Moriarty.
  • After Ward netted a goal off a pass by McDuffee, MacKay and Ward each scored for the 10-0 final score. Moriarty posted an assist on each goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Iona, 19-12.
  • Maloney made six saves for the Crusaders to earn the win, while Samantha Tyo had five and Shannon McCaffrey posted three.
  • Holy Cross secured eight draw controls, while Iona had four. Holy Cross had 18 ground balls, while Iona picked up 15.
  • The Crusaders went 1-1 on free-position shots, while the Gaels went 0-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • This is the second shutout in program history for the Crusaders. The first shutout was on April 23, 1998, with a 21-0 victory over Quinnipiac.
  • The last time the Crusaders started the season with a 2-1 record was the 2013 season.
  • Mandaro scored her first collegiate goal.
  • Ward’s hat trick was her second of the season and the fifth of her career.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when they travel to Providence, R.I. to play Brown at 6:00 p.m.
