Women's Lacrosse Defeats Army West Point, 12-9

The Lead: Seniors Tess MacKay, Mary Patalita and Maddie Ward, and freshmen Bryn Carroll and Audrey Mandaro each scored two goals as the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team defeated Army West Point, 12-9, in Patriot League action on Wednesday afternoon.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead with two straight free-position goals by Ward.
  • But the Black Knights responded with two consecutive goals to tie the contest at 2-2 with 16:27 remaining in the first half.
  • The Crusaders moved out to a 4-2 advantage when Patalita and Carroll each found the back of the net.
  • After a goal by Samantha Stewart cut the lead to 4-3, sophomore Baker Earl posted a goal to give the Crusaders a 5-3 lead with 8:30 left. But a free-position goal by Manuela Cortes made it a 5-4 game.
  • Two straight goals by MacKay increased the lead to 7-4. Freshman Emma Gill tallied an assist on the first goal and sophomore Molly Pfaff tallied an assist on the second goal.
  • After Cortes scored, freshman Maggie Moriarty netted a goal on a free-position shot with just one second remaining as the Crusaders took an 8-5 lead to the half.
  • After Mandaro scored the first goal of the second half, Army posted two goals to make it a 9-7 contest.
  • The Crusaders then responded with a free-position goal by Patalita.
  • With the score now 10-8 after an Army goal, Carroll netted her second goal of the game to increase the advantage to 11-8 with 8:22 remaining.
  • Stewart cut the lead to 11-9 with 53 seconds left, but Mandaro scored with just 17 seconds remaining off a pass by Ward for the 12-9 final score.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Army, 31-23.
  • Junior captain Julia Maloney made nine saves for the Crusaders to earn the victory, while Kayla Rowley made six saves for Army.
  • Army secured 12 draw controls, while the Crusaders posted 10.
  • The Black Knights picked up 23 groundballs, while the Crusaders tallied 17.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Carroll posted a career-best two goals.
  • Senior captain Anna Johnson has 100 career ground balls.
  • Patalita leads the team with two game-winning goals this season.

PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS TO BE HONORED:

 

  • April 8th will be a special day for the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse program as it will be honoring the senior class and recognizing the accomplishments of the 2006 and 2007 Patriot League Championship teams.
  • Before the Crusaders’ game against Loyola (Md.), the team will be honoring its senior class for their hard work on and off the field over the last four years. Then at halftime, the 2006 and 2007 Patriot League Championship teams will be recognized on the field for their accomplishments. In the evening, alumni, family and friends will have the opportunity to gather in the newly renovated Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex for a cocktail reception. The day will conclude with a dinner, celebratory program and silent auction in the Loyola Ballroom. The evening will be an opportunity to connect with the current players, coaches, alumni and parents, and to share your memories of the program. Go here to register.
