Ryan & Burns Earn Patriot League All-Academic Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's lacrosse senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) and junior Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) have been named to the Patriot League All-Academic team. This is the first time that either player has received this honor. This is also the first time in program history that more than one member of the team has earned All-Academic accolades. To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 total grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The team is voted on by women's lacrosse media relations directors from around the conference who could not vote for their own student-athletes.
Ryan, who has a 3.48 grade-point average as an Economics major, is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, while has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice. Ryan also coordinates the team's volunteering at the Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Ryan recently made her fourth straight appearance on the All-Patriot League squad. She was named to the first team this season, while she was a second team selection in 2012, 2013 and 2014. She is only the third player in school history to earn All-Conference honors four times, along with Erin Rowse (2000-2003) and Patricia Sutton (2004-2007). Ryan started all 18 games this season, and led the team with 46 points and 37 goals, while she was second with nine assists. She also totaled team-highs of 51 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers, while she was second with 34 ground balls. Over the course of her Holy Cross career, she totaled 143 goals and 38 assists for 181 points, to go along with 202 draw controls, 135 ground balls and 92 caused turnovers. She is the only player in program history to rank in the school's career top 10 in points (fourth), goals (third), assists (eight), ground balls (seventh), draw controls (first) and caused turnovers (first). Ryan is fourth all-time in Patriot League history in draw controls and sixth in caused turnovers.
Burns has a 3.78 grade-point average and is a Biology major. She just recently earned second team All-Patriot League honors. Burns started all 18 games for the Crusaders this season on defense. She led the team lead with 37 ground balls, while ranking second on the squad with 26 caused turnovers. Burns currently ranks fourth in the Patriot League in caused turnovers, in addition to being tied for sixth place on the Holy Cross single season list for caused turnovers. She has now totaled 45 career caused turnovers in 47 games played, and ranks ninth on the school career list for caused turnovers. Burns is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
