A Sensational Saturday In Holy Cross History
WORCESTER, Mass. – On Saturday, Oct. 15, Holy Cross Athletics turned in several performances for the ages! The football team and the men’s ice hockey team both knocked off nationally-ranked opponents, marking the first time in recorded school history that two different Holy Cross teams have defeated ranked foes on the same day.
In addition to these huge victories by the football and men’s ice hockey teams, several other Holy Cross squads posted impressive performances over the weekend. Here is a look back at when everything happened on Saturday:
12:52 p.m.: The men’s rowing varsity eight won the Snake Regatta for the seventh straight season. The Crusaders also broke the course record by 11 seconds.
1:17 p.m.: Field hockey defeated Bucknell 1-0 in a shootout. The Crusaders downed the Bison for the first time since 2008 and improved to 3-2 in conference play. Holy Cross is in prime position to earn its first bid to the Patriot League Tournament since 2006.
4:02 p.m.: Football closed out a 27-17 victory over No. 20 Harvard. Holy Cross scored 21 unanswered points in the first quarter to claim the lead, and the defense held the Crimson scoreless in the second half to secure the victory. This marked the fifth time football has beaten a ranked team in the last 12 years, and its first win over a ranked foe since 2009.
6:27 p.m.: Volleyball downed Bucknell 3-0 on the road. Holy Cross won at Bucknell for the first time since 2001, and moved up to sixth place in the Patriot League standings.
9:20 p.m.: Men’s ice hockey rallied to defeat No. 11 Providence 2-1 in overtime. Holy Cross tied the game with less than four minutes remaining in the third period, then ended the game less than two minutes into overtime. The Crusaders defeated a ranked team for the first time since beating Boston College in 2013, and posted their sixth win over a ranked opponent in the last 11 years.
Both the Holy Cross football and men’s ice hockey teams will be back in action at home this coming Saturday. The football team will play host to Lehigh in a 12:05 p.m. game at Fitton Field, while the men’s ice hockey team will face Boston College at 7:05 p.m. at the DCU Center.
