Men's Swimming And Diving Finishes Fourth At The Harold Anderson Invitational

The Lead: The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team took fourth place out of five teams with 588.5 points, setting 11 season-best marks at the Harold Anderson Invitational in Kingston, R.I. on Nov. 18-19.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Jake Sbarbaro led Holy Cross finishing first in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 1:57.22.  He later took third place in the 200 IM with another season-best time of 1:56.78.
  • Sophomore Steve Tierney led the Crusaders in two events. Tierney finished sixth overall in the 50 freestyle, recording a season-best time of 22.20. In the 100 butterfly, Tierney took second place with a time of 51.95, setting another season-best mark.
  • The team of Tierney, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins, Sbarbaro and sophomore Kevin Lagasse started the relays with a fifth-place finish for a season-best time of 3:34.49 in the 400 medley relay. The Crusaders later notched a second fifth-place spot in the 200 freestyle relay, as the squad of sophomore Aaron Wong, senior co-captain Alex Young, Lagasse and sophomore Corey Manley recorded a time of 1:30.24. In the 200 medley relay, Tierney, Higgins, Sbarbaro and Manley placed sixth with a time of 1:36.62.
  • Freshman Chris Fusco led Holy Cross, taking 10th place in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 5:01.94. Fusco later was the first Crusader to finish in the 100 backstroke, swimming for a time of 56.67 and in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:59.56, good for fourth place.
  • Junior Jimmy Nugent scored the most points for Holy Cross in both the one and three-meter diving events. First in the three-meter, he notched a fourth place finish with a score of 164.85. Next in the one-meter dive, he tallied 197.20 points for third place.
  • Junior co-captain Hayden Kucharski took sixth place in the 400 IM, recording a season-best time of 4:21.88.
  • Young was the first Holy Cross swimmer to finish in the 200 freestyle, registering a time of 1:48.64 for the ninth place spot and in the 100 freestyle, taking the eighth place spot with a time of 48.85.
  • Higgins placed fourth overall in the 100 breaststroke, logging a season-best and career record time of 58.66, before placing third in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:08.62.
  • Junior John Williams took seventh place in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 19:01.24.
  • To end the meet, freshman Christian Realbuto, sophomore David Dillard, sophomore Sean Severson and Kucharski took 10th place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.32.
  • Providence won the meet with 830 points. 

 UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 in a dual meet at Providence at 10:00 a.m.
