Swimming And Diving Sets Five New Records At The Opening Day Of The Patriot League Championship

THE BASICS:

Day One Score: Men: 7th out of 10 Teams (42 pts.) | Women: 9th out of 10 Teams (45 pts.)
Location: Lewisburg, Pa. (Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium inside the Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center)

The Lead: Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each swam to two new school records in the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays, as sophomore Steve Tierney also broke the 200-yard freestyle record at the opening day of the Patriot League Championship hosted by Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN THE WOMEN’S MEET:

  • The team of freshman Kayleigh Hoagland, sophomore Caroline Body and juniors Maura Mullaney and Katie Conners set a new Holy Cross record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.33. The squad broke the previous record set at the 2010 Patriot League Championship of 1:49.79. The Crusaders finished ninth in this event, as Navy captured first place with a  time of 1:40.59.
  • Next in the 800-yard freestyle relay, Conners, Hoagland, sophomore Emma Gurchiek and junior Nina Sparre reached a second school record with a time of 7:41.65, beating the former record set at the 2015 Patriot League Championship of 7:49.03. Holy Cross finished eighth in the race, as Navy earned its second first place finish with a 7:11.29 mark.
  • In the three-meter dive, sophomore Casey Sherman took 12th with a score of 228.65, as Boston University’s Kyra Tatlow landed in first place with a score of 294.20.

 HOW IT HAPPENED IN THE MEN’S MEET:

  • In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Tierney, senior co-captain Andrew Higgins, junior Jake Sbarbaro and sophomore Kevin Lagasse captured a new school record, swimming for a time of 1:35.10. The team broke a record from the 2015 Patriot League Championship (1:35.31). The Crusaders finished seventh in the race, while Army West Point took first place with a time of 1:27.97.
  • Leading off the 800-yard relay, Tierney then set the 200-meter freestyle school record with his time of 1:39.47. Tierney broke the former record time (1:41.24) set at the 2003 Patriot League Championship.
  • Finishing up the opening day competition with the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Crusaders recorded a second school record with a time of 6:58.24. The relay team consisted of Tierney, junior co-captain Hayden Kucharski, sophomore Corey Manley and Sbarbaro, as Holy Cross finished ninth. The squad broke the previous record set at last year’s Patriot League Championship (6:59.65). Navy finished first in this event with a time of 6:35.43.
