Men's Swimming And Diving Compete At The New England Catholic Invitational

THE BASICS:

The Lead: Sophomore Steve Tierney led the Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team with a first place finish in the 100 butterfly, setting a new team-best time and personal record of 52.88, but the Crusaders took third place with 536 points at the New England Catholic Invitational from Oct. 14-15.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tierney later swam for third place in the 100 backstroke for a new team-best time and personal record of 56:00 before setting another season-best time for Holy Cross, taking third overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.55.
  • Junior Jake Sbarbaro took fifth in the 200 IM for a new team season record of 2:01.06 before junior co-captain Hayden Kucharski also captured a fifth place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.77. Sbarbaro later swam for ninth overall and first for Holy Cross for a time of 1:52.07 in the 200 freestyle.
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Higgins followed with a sixth place overall finish in the 100 breaststroke, setting a season-best time of 1:02.65 for the Crusaders. He also finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke for a time of 2:17.49. Kucharski was 12th in the 200 breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:20.52.
  • The team of sophomores Kevin Lagasse and Aaron Wong as well as freshman Christian Realbuto and senior co-captain Alex Young finished on top for Holy Cross and fourth overall in the 200 freestyle relay, setting a season-best time of 1:27.66. Realbuto also was the first Holy Cross swimmer to finish in the 200 butterfly, notching a time of 2:10.44.
  • Young swam for 10th place in the 50 freestyle, setting a season-best time of 22.70.
  • Freshman Chris Fusco took the 12th place spot in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.36 with junior John Williams swimming right behind him in 13th place for a time of 5:31.84. Fusco later landed another top spot for the Crusaders, taking ninth overall in the 200 backstroke for a time of 2:06.40.
  • In the 400 medley relay, the squad of Tierney, Higgins, Sbarbaro and sophomore Corey Manley took fourth overall and first for the Crusaders for a time of 3:40.62.
  • For the 200 medley relay, sophomore Sam Devine, Higgins, Kucharski and Wong took sixth place with a time of 1:44.20.
  • Sbarbaro, Manley, Young and Tierney took third in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:18.57.
  • For diving, junior Jimmy Nugent was fourth in the one meter dive with a score of 207.70, while finishing fourth in the three meter dive with a score of 173.20.
  • Boston College won the meet with a score of 1,762 and Providence was second with 616 points.
